The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 2020 began on August 1, 2020 and are expected to be played until October 2020. On May 26, 2020, the National Hockey League (NHL) released a plan to resume game operations interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic . This provides for a significantly changed playoff mode with 24 participating teams and an additional round. In mid-July 2020, the Canadian cities of Toronto and Edmonton were announced as venues and a specific schedule was published.
Despite the increased number of participants, all three California teams - namely Anaheim , Los Angeles and San Jose - missed the playoffs for the first time since 1996 . In contrast, six Canadian teams qualified, as many as last in 1993 . Meanwhile, the Arizona Coyotes , who were last represented in the 2012 playoffs , ended their negative run of seven seasons without participating in the post-season . Among the active franchises , this was previously the second-longest series of this kind, which was only surpassed by the Buffalo Sabers , who are not playing for the Stanley Cup for the ninth time in a row this year.
mode
This year the top twelve teams from each conference are qualified for the playoffs. However, these are determined by the point quota, i.e. the ratio of the points won and the maximum achievable points, as not all teams have played the same number of games. The four best teams of both conferences, regardless of the division , are set by a bye directly for the first round. As a result, teams 5 to 12 on the seeding list compete against each other in a qualifying round , according to the pattern 5 against 12, 6 against 11, etc. These series should be played according to the best-of-five mode. Meanwhile, the four best teams play in a round robin tournament, each against each other, for the position in the seeding list for the first round. Thus, the first round consists of the usual 16 teams, while the usual best-of-seven mode is used from the first round . However, unlike in recent years, the pairings are re-set after each round, as opposed to a pre-determined playoff tree. That is, in each round the best team plays against the weakest remaining team on the seeding list. The other classic playoff regulations such as continuous overtime with sudden death remain unchanged.
Venues
For the time being, two cities (hub cities) should be chosen as the venues , one each for the Eastern and Western Conference. The game and training operations as well as the accommodation of players and officials in hotels should be carried out on these under conditions that meet hygiene regulations. The choice fell in mid-July 2020 on Toronto for the east and Edmonton for the west. Chicago , Columbus , Dallas , Las Vegas , Los Angeles , Minneapolis / Saint Paul , Pittsburgh and Vancouver were also considered beforehand . As expected, all games without spectators should be played as ghost games .

(2) Tampa Bay Lightning - (7) Columbus Blue Jackets
In the Conference quarter-finals, the Tampa Bay Lightning met the Columbus Blue Jackets and prevailed 4-1. This was the re - edition of the clash of the previous year , in which the Blue Jackets had caused one of the biggest surprises in NHL history in the first round with a sweep of the Presidents' Trophy winner from Tampa Bay. In the first game in this series, the teams made history again by playing the fourth longest game in playoff history . In the fifth overtime , the Lightning prevailed 3: 2, with Seth Jones (65:06 minutes) and Joonas Korpisalo (85 shots saved ) from Columbus each setting new NHL records . Ultimately, Nikita Kutscherow and Brayden Point were particularly convincing for the Lightning with seven scorer points each , while with Joonas Korpisalo and Andrei Wassilewski both goalkeepers achieved an above-average catch rate of over 93%.

As the only lower-ranked team, the New York Islanders succeeded in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Conference to advance against the Washington Capitals , which they defeated 4-1. Above all, the defensive of the "Isles" was convincing, allowing only eight goals against in five games, while Washington only scored three players as goalscorers. In goal, Semyon Varlamov bribed his old employer with a shutout and a catch quota of 93.5% against Braden Holtby (89.5%) on the part of the Capitals, who also had to forego the alternative Ilya Samsonov due to injury . In the offensive of New York, Josh Bailey (6 points scorer ) as well as Anthony Beauvillier and captain Anders Lee (3 goals each) showed good performances.

(4) Boston Bruins - (5) Carolina Hurricanes
Also between the Boston Bruins and the Carolina Hurricanes there was a re-run of the previous year, which after the sweep of the Bruins in the Conference finals 2019 had a similar outcome in these playoffs with a 4-1 victory in Boston. In the Bruins it was mainly David Krejčí (8 points), who got more time for David Pastrňák , who was missing in three out of five games , and Brad Marchand (7 points) who made the difference on the offensive. In addition, the Bruins had to do without regular goalkeeper Tuukka Rask from the third game , who left Toronto for family reasons, but was easily represented by Jaroslav Halák (93.2% catch quota ). On the side of the Hurricanes, who again sent a goalkeeper duo into the race with Petr Mrázek (92.4%) and James Reimer (91.2%), no player except Sebastian Aho achieved 4 points. In addition, Carolina's attacker Andrei Swetschnikow was injured in game three and was no longer used.

Western Conference
(1) Vegas Golden Knights - (8) Chicago Blackhawks
The Vegas Golden Knights made the first playoff encounter of both teams with a 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks . Although Chicago's Corey Crawford (92.0% catch quota ) outperformed his opponent Robin Lehner (90.5%) statistically (Game 3 was played by Marc-André Fleury for Vegas), it was ultimately the aggressive fore-checking and the squad depth of the Golden Knights - only three Outfield players remained without a scorer point - which made the difference in the series. For Vegas, Reilly Smith impressed offensively with six points and Jonathan Marchessault with five assists, while on the Blackhawks side only Patrick Kane (5 points) was able to score more than four points. Jonathan Toews and Dominik Kubalík in particular did not succeed in building on the convincing performances of the previous round.

For the first time in 20 years, since the Conference quarterfinals of the playoffs in 2000 , the Colorado Avalanche met the Arizona Coyotes again and prevailed 4-1, as they did then. In what was probably the most one-sided series of this round, which ended with 22: 8 goals for Colorado, Nathan MacKinnon in particular impressed with 10 scorer points , who also led the entire league (together with Elias Pettersson ) with 13 points at the end of the Conference quarter-finals , as well Nazem Kadri with 5 hits. In the end, the statistics on the goalkeeper position were also clear: Philipp Grubauer achieved a catch rate of over 95%, while Darcy Kuemper stayed below 90% for Arizona. In addition, none of the Coyotes players achieved more than three scorer points.

The last time this was the case with the same result was in 1981 , when Dallas was still operating as Minnesota North Stars . On the side of the stars, defender Miro Heiskanen was the top scorer (8) of the series and Denis Gurjanow with six goals, four of which he scored in the ultimately decisive sixth game, Dallas after 3-0 deficit with 7: 3 decided for itself. Anton Chudobin (91.8% catch rate ) and Cam Talbot for Calgary (91.3%) met at eye level in the goalkeeping position . The Flames' best scorer was Sam Bennett with five points.

(4) St. Louis Blues - (5) Vancouver Canucks
The St. Louis Blues were eliminated as defending champions in the Conference quarter-finals by a 2-4 loss to the Vancouver Canucks . While the offensive performers of the previous year confirmed their achievements in the Blues ( Ryan O'Reilly with 8 and David Perron with 7 scorer points ), Jordan Binnington did not even come close in goal, he lost the first two games and was during the series, as well like in the middle of the ultimately decisive sixth game, replaced by Jake Allen . In the end, he ended the series with a catch rate of only 80%, so statistically every fifth shot passed. Jacob Markström on the other side convinced with 93% saved shots, while Elias Pettersson (9 points) as well as JT Miller , Bo Horvat and Tyler Motte (4 hits each) appeared. In addition, the Blues had to do without Wladimir Tarassenko and Alexander Steen for most of the series due to injuries .
