Matthew "Matt" Murray (born May 25, 1994 in Thunder Bay , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League since 2015 . As a rookie , he won the Stanley Cup with the team in the 2016 and 2017 playoffs .
Career
Matt Murray first played ice hockey in his hometown of Thunder Bay . From 2007 to 2010 he was part of the Thunder Bay Kings team. At the OHL Priority Selection 2010 he was in the second round in 35th place by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds , for whom he played from the 2010-11 season. In his first two years in the Ontario Hockey League Murray shared the operating times with the other goalkeepers of the team and missed each qualification for the playoffs . In the 2012 NHL Entry Draft , the Pittsburgh Penguins selected him in the third round in 83rd place. Murray stayed in the OHL for two more years and established himself as a regular goalkeeper with the greyhounds. He led his team into the playoffs, in which they were eliminated in the conference quarterfinals and conference semifinals. After completing his last season in the OHL, Murray made his professional debut in the American Hockey League for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins at the end of the 2013/14 season and played two games.
For the 2014/15 season , Murray's Entry Level Contract came into effect, which he had already signed in September 2013. At the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins, he formed the goalkeeper duo with Jeff Zatkoff . On March 8, 2015, Murray set a new AHL record when he went clean for 304 minutes and eleven seconds. The previous record was 268 minutes and 17 seconds, set by Barry Brust in November 2012. On March 22, 2015 Murray set another record. His tenth shutout of the season was a new record for rookies . He finished the season with twelve shutouts, as well as the best catch quota and the best goal average of all goalkeepers in the AHL season. Because of his outstanding performance, Murray was elected to the AHL All-Rookie Team and AHL First All-Star Team . He also received the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award for best rookie, the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award for best goalkeeper, and the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award for the best goal counter with Jeff Zatkoff. In the 2015/16 season , Murray shared the AHL playing times with Tristan Jarry , another Penguins draft pick. He also performed well in his sophomore year and was appointed to the Pittsburgh Penguins' NHL squad for the first time on December 15, 2015. Four days later, Murray made his National Hockey League debut against the Carolina Hurricanes . After goalkeeper Marc-André Fleury was out with a concussion at the end of the regular season, Murray took over his role and played nine games in a row. He was unable to play the first two games of the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs due to an injury and was replaced by Jeff Zatkoff. The Penguins then relied on Murray, who was only the sixth rookie goalkeeper in the last 30 years to lead his team into the final. After six games he was able to win the Stanley Cup with the Penguins .
In the following season 2016/17 Murray shared the operating time with Fleury and won his second Stanley Cup at the end of the season, leading all goalkeepers in the playoffs in shutouts, goals against goals and catch rates. Due to his few appearances in the previous year, he was still considered a rookie and became the first rookie goalkeeper ever to win two Stanley Cups. He was also elected to the 2017 NHL All-Rookie Team .
International
For his home country Murray took part in the U18 Junior World Championship 2012 in the Czech Republic . In the tournament, he completed all seven games and was able to win the bronze medal with his team. On March 2, 2016, he was appointed to the North America team for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .
Murray made his international debut in the jersey of the senior national team at the 2019 World Cup in Slovakia , where he won the silver medal with the team.
