Juuso Riikola (born November 9, 1993 in Joensuu ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League since May 2018 and plays for them in the position of defender . His brother Simo-Pekka , who is one year older, is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Riikola learned to play ice hockey in the youth department of Saimaan Pallo from Lappeenranta . There the defender played until the end of the 2008/09 season before he moved to Kalevan Pallo from Kuopio when he was C-Junior . There the defender went through the youth department up to the A-Juniors. The then 16-year-old already became a regular player in the 2010/11 season. In the course of the 2012/13 season Riikola made his debut for the first time in the professional team, which was based in the SM-liiga , the top division in the country. From the following game year, the young talent was part of the permanent staff and played for the team until the end of the 2017/18 season . He celebrated his greatest success to date by winning the runner-up in spring 2017.
After the 2017/18 season, Riikola first signed a contract with KalPa's league rivals Rauman Lukko for the upcoming season in April 2018 . However, this was only dissolved a month later, as the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League had offered the defensive player a one-year contract for the 2018/19 season . Riikola then moved to North America for the 2018/19 season and made her debut for the Penguins in the NHL in October 2018.
International
For his home country, Riikola was on the ice in the junior division at the U20 World Junior Championships 2013 in Ufa, Russia, for the Finnish U20 national team . He was used in six tournament games and reached seventh place with the team. The defender made his debut for the Finnish national team as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2017/18 . At the 2018 World Cup in Denmark he took part in a major international tournament for the first time. The Finnish team finished fifth overall at the World Cup.
