Chad Ruhwedel (born May 7, 1990 in San Diego , California ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League since July 2016 and also for their farm team , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , plays in the American Hockey League on the position of defender .
Career
Ruhwedel first spent his junior years between 2008 and 2010 at the Sioux Falls Stampede in the United States Hockey League , before enrolling at the University of Massachusetts Lowell for three years at the beginning of summer 2010 . During this time he played parallel for the ice hockey team of the university in the Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . With the team he won the division championship in the third and final year.
Without drafting , the defender then moved to the Buffalo Sabers from the National Hockey League , who signed him in April 2013. During the rest of the 2012/13 season he came to seven NHL missions. In the following game year, Rudwedels missions were divided between the Rochester Americans farm team in the American Hockey League and the Sabers in the NHL, so that the defender made legitimate hopes for a regular place in the NHL squad for the 2014/15 season. Between October 2014 and April 2016, however, he only played five more games for Buffalo, after 28 earlier. Mainly he was active for the Amerks in the AHL. After his contract expired at the end of the 2015/16 season , the contract was not extended and in July 2016 Ruhwedel joined the reigning Stanley Cup winner Pittsburgh Penguins as a free agent . After some time in the AHL farm team Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , he made the leap into the Pittsburgh squad in December 2016. With the Pittsburgh Penguins he won the Stanley Cup at the end of the season , but was not immortalized on the trophy due to too few appearances.
