Dominik Simon (born August 8, 1994 in Prague ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League since July 2015 and for their farm team , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , in American Hockey League plays in the position of the left winger .

Career

Simon went through the youth department of the traditional Czech club HC Sparta Prague from his hometown. During the 2012/13 season , the then 18-year-old made his debut in the extra league for the professional team. He was also used in the second-class first division for the HC Stadium Litoměřice . In the summer of 2014, the striker left his home club and moved within the Extraliga to HC Plzeň 1929 , where he made his breakthrough with 30 scorer points in 52 appearances. He was then considered in fourth position by Lokomotive Yaroslavl in the KHL Junior Draft 2015 , making him the most highly elected European since Aleksander Barkov .

With his achievements, Simon had drawn attention to the franchises of the National Hockey League , whereupon he was selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft in 137th position by the Pittsburgh Penguins . Only a few weeks later they provided him with a contract and brought him to their farm team , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , from the American Hockey League . There the attacker spent most of the season in the following two seasons, but also made five appearances in the NHL during this period. In the course of the 2017/18 season , Simon finally managed to establish himself in the NHL squad for a longer period of time.

International

For his home country, the striker was used in numerous junior tournaments. He played the ice hockey tournament of the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2011 , the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 , the World Junior A Challenge 2011 as well as the U18 Junior World Championship in 2012 and the U20 Junior World Championship in 2014 . However, Simon could not win a medal there. He made his debut for the Czech national team as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2014/15 and then played his first major international tournament, the 2015 World Cup .
