Jake Guentzel (born October 6, 1994 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League since May 2016 and plays for them on the position of the center . His older brother Gabe Guentzel is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Youth and University
After graduating from high school, Guentzel played with the Sioux City Musketeers in the United States Hockey League with the 2012/13 season . The rookie was 73 scorer points , the best by far scorer of his team during the season. He finished sixth in the league and was named Rookie of the Year at the end of the season . He was also appointed to the All-Rookie Team and Second All-Star Team. After the end of the season, Guentzel was selected in the third round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in 77th place by the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League . The forward enrolled at the University of Nebraska Omaha in the summer of 2013 . In addition to his studies, he played the following three years in the university's ice hockey program, which was part of the newly introduced National Collegiate Hockey Conference , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his first year of play, Guentzel collected 34 points and was again a member of the league's all-rookie team.
NHL
In the following two years the attacker was one of the team's best scorers and rose to 39 points in his second year, followed by his last season with 46 points. After completing the 2015/16 season at the university, Guentzel received an amateur trial contract with the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins from the American Hockey League at the end of March 2016 . The American was initially used in eleven regular season games, in which he scored six times, before adding 14 points in ten playoff games. He was the rookie with the best points in the playoffs and secured an NHL entry contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins the following May . At the beginning of the 2016/17 game year, they initially used it with their cooperation partner in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. Guentzel collected 17 scorer points in the first 16 missions, which meant he was appointed to the Pittsburgh NHL squad for the first time at the end of November. He scored two goals on his debut against the New York Rangers . Ultimately, he commuted between the NHL and AHL squad with great success over the course of the season, which led to his appointment to the AHL All-Rookie Team .
With Pittsburgh, Guentzel won the Stanley Cup in the subsequent playoffs and led the league with 13 goals scored. Among all rookies in NHL history, only Dino Ciccarelli scored more goals in the playoffs in 1981 (14). He confirmed his 21 scorer points scored in the following year , although he only completed twelve games because the Penguins failed in the second round at the later Stanley Cup winner from Washington . The attacker then signed a new five-year contract in Pittsburgh in December 2018, which should earn him an average annual salary of six million US dollars from the start of the 2019/20 season. Meanwhile, he ended the current season with a new career record of 76 points, where he also reached the mark of 40 goals for the first time and led his team in this category.
