Gabriel John "Gabe" Guentzel (born May 2, 1988 in Woodbury , Minnesota ) is an American - German ice hockey player who was most recently under contract with the Augsburg Panthers in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL).
Career
After his beginnings at the Hill-Murray School in Maplewood (US state Minnesota), Guentzel developed in the North American Hockey League with Southern Minnesota Express and in the United States Hockey League with Sioux Falls Stampede.
From 2008 to 2012 he studied and played at Colorado College , then in the American Hockey League for Syracuse Crunch and the Norfolk Admirals , before he had a brief guest appearance at the ECHL club Fort Wayne Komets in the 2012/13 season .
For the 2013/14 season moved Guentzel Suedtiroler club Rittner Buam in the Italian Serie A .
He started the 2014/15 season with the Swedish second division Asplöven HC before signing a contract with the German second division Fischtown Pinguins in January 2015 . In spring 2015 he received a German passport. At the end of the main round of the 2015/16 season, Guentzel received the title of Defender of the Year in the DEL2 .
In May 2016, the Augsburg Panthers from the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) announced Guentzel's commitment.
family
Guentzel's father Mike is a longtime ice hockey coach at the University of Minnesota . Mike was assistant coach at Colorado College in the 2008/09 season and previously coach and manager of the USHL club Omaha Lancers and assistant coach of the US junior national team.
Gabe's older brother Ryan played ice hockey at the University of Notre Dame and was active in the 2011/12 season as a professional for the German upper division EHC Klostersee and in Denmark for the first division club Aalborg Pirates . His younger brother Jake played ice hockey at the University of Nebraska-Omaha before turning pro.
