The Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven are an ice hockey club from Bremerhaven that has been playing in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) since the 2016/17 season .

The parent club of the Pinguins is the Rolling and Ice Sports Club Bremerhaven . The game operations of the professional REV Bremerhaven team were outsourced to Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven SBG mbH in summer 2002 . In 2001 the professional team won the championship of the 2nd Bundesliga , in 2014 the championship in the newly founded DEL2 . In 2016 the club successfully applied for a free license in the DEL.

history

For the first time in higher-class ice hockey, the Roller and Skate Club (RSC) Bremerhaven, founded in 1941, appeared in the Regionalliga Nord in 1974/75 .

In the period from 1978/79 to 1983 , the RSC team played in the 2nd Northern League .

After the bankruptcy of RSC Bremerhaven in 1984, REV Bremerhaven, which had been founded as a precautionary measure, became the successor club of the RSC and took part in the regional league from 1984/85 onwards .

The team of the REV played 1994 at the time of the introduction of the DEL in the Oberliga Nord and was classified in the 2nd League North . In 1997 the team was promoted to the 1st League North . From the second highest division, however, Bremerhaven had to relegate back to the third-class 1st ice hockey league in the first season in 1998 . There the REV succeeded in 1999 , as the first of the preliminary round group north against the southern season winner SC Bietigheim-Bissingen, in the return game, to secure the direct promotion to the "old" 1st division north. This became through the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga introduced in the previous year, now the third-class ice hockey league . In 2000, REV Bremerhaven reached the newly established second-class 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga with its second promotion in a row .

Outsourcing of the professional area

In summer 2001 the professional team was outsourced to REV Bremerhaven Fördergesellschaft mbH .

In the 2001/02 season the team achieved the championship title of the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga and could have applied for a license for the DEL 2002/03 . However, the application was waived - among other things for financial reasons and because of the condition of the venue at that time. Then the runner-up ERC Ingolstadt was able to submit his application and be promoted to the DEL.

In the summer of 2002, with the approval of ESBG, the team was transferred from the development company to Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven SBG mbH . The bankruptcy petition was then filed for the funding company.

In the 2002/03 season they rose as the previous year's champion surprisingly in the league after they had lost to ETC Crimmitschau in the playdown series 1: 3. Although there were still hopes of remaining in the 2nd Bundesliga due to the financial hardships of other clubs, they still had to move into the top division.

Under the coach Peter Draisaitl , the team succeeded in being promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2003/04 season . After the preliminary round was completed as 1st and the championship round as 2nd, they did not lose a game in the play-offs and secured the championship title.

The 2004/2005 season ended with a 5th place as a climber. In the play-off quarter-finals, the Schwenninger Wild Wings were defeated in seven games. In the semifinals, the first round, the Straubing Tigers , were opponents of the REV, who lost the series 1: 3.

Final entry and cup sensation

In the 2005/2006 season under the new coach Igor Pavlov the preliminary round was completed with 1st place. In the play-off quarter-finals, the team defeated Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg in five games. In the semifinals, the seventh in the preliminary round, the Dresdner Eislöwen , were opponents of the REV. Dresden was confidently beaten 3-0 in the series and the REV moved into the final of the 2nd Bundesliga against the Straubing Tigers again after 2002 . In the final, the team lost their first two games, and the series appeared to be over. The REV won the following two games and so there was a play-off in Bremerhaven on April 17th. Bremerhaven lost the game 1: 2 and the series 2: 3. The athletic promotion to the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) was missed.

The 2006/2007 season already offered two “sensations” from the penguins' point of view in the first half. As part of the German Ice Hockey Cup , after a first round win at the Hanover Indians, the DEL teams from Düsseldorf (defending champions) with 9: 2 and the Lions from Frankfurt with 2: 1 in the ice rink on Wilhelm-Kaisen-Platz were thrown out of the current competition. In December 2006, coach Igor Pavlov extended his work on the gang with the Fischtown Pinguins for another year (2007/2008 season). On January 16, 2007, the dream of a possible DEB Cup final ended: they lost 1: 5 on home ice to the Adler from Mannheim, who later made the double in German ice hockey as later cup winners and German champions . For the penguins, the season ended with third place and consequently home rights in the first round of the play-offs. However, these ended quickly. In the sixth game of the series Best of seven against EHC Munich, it was a 0-1 defeat in the Munich Olympic ice stadium , which was sealed 62 seconds before the end of regular time by Munich's Gordon Borberg and thus meant the end of the quarter-finals.

In the main round of the 2007/08 season , which began on September 14, 2007 , the club indicated early relegation as a season goal. Unfortunately, the season was very different. The Fischtown Pinguins were almost without exception in the table basement and ended up in 12th place. They therefore had to go into the playdowns against the Lausitzer Füchse . While the foxes were in the playdowns for the third time in a row, this was rather shocking for the fans of the Fischtown Penguins, who had been spoiled by success in recent years. The round was very close: after six games it was a draw 3: 3 (5: 0, 2: 3, 6: 3, 3: 2 afterwards, 1: 2, 2: 3 afterwards), so that the last game in the home ice rink in Bremerhaven had to decide everything. Both teams played self-sacrificingly, in the end Bremerhaven was able to win the series 6: 4 (the last goal was an “empty net goal”) and thus remained athletically in the 2nd Bundesliga. The foxes were later spared relegation to the league again due to the insolvency of the Eisbären Regensburg and the mosquitos Essen .

In the 2008/09 season Craig Streu , who has been playing for Bremerhaven since 1999, took over as coach of the Fischtown Pinguins. The season also started very positively at first, as the penguins were able to win the SWB Energy Cup in the final against the Iserlohn Roosters in their own hall as part of the season preparation . After that, however, the 2007/08 season seemed to repeat itself . The Pinguins won 15 out of 24 home games, but at the same time they lost 18 out of 24 away games, which ended up being 10th. Since the Tölzer Löwen were excluded from the playoffs prematurely due to bankruptcy after the main round despite their 2nd place, all clubs moved up one place, so that Bremerhaven was finally in 9th place. The pre-playoffs against SERC Wild Wings were won in two games, but the quarter-finals against EHC Munich ended 0: 4 after four games.

The 2009/10 season began on September 11, 2009. Contrary to many expectations, the Fischtown Pinguins had to go into the relegation round. There, however, they were able to prevail in the first round with 4-1 victories against EHC Freiburg and thus keep their class in terms of sport.

For the 2010/11 season remained the goal of early relegation. In contrast to previous years, a large part of the team had stayed with the club and the squad was supplemented by players who (with the exception of the young players) all had experience in the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey . The Fischtown Pinguins finished the main round as 3rd, but then had to admit defeat to the Dresden Ice Lions after 5 games in the playoff quarter-finals .

For many years, a cooperation agreement between Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven SBG mbH and Hannover Scorpions regulated the exchange of players with funding licenses between the two clubs. The cooperation agreement ended after the 2009/10 season. The cooperation with the Kölner Haien , which had already started in the 2009/2010 season, lasted until the 2010/11 season.

From athletic descent to the DEL2 championship

The 2011/12 season began on September 23, 2011 for the team with the championship lead after five match days. Halfway through the main round, they had a good second place in the table with 45 points (15 S, 9 N). The second half series was disappointing with 11 wins and 15 losses. During this time there were also long series of 10 games without a win, which lasted from December 23, 2011 to January 22, 2012 and from February 5, 2012 to March 4, 2012. The team finished the main round with 69 points (24 S, 24 N) as ninth in the table and thus missed the play-offs by just one point. Due to the new game mode, Bremerhaven had to go into the relegation round with the last four placed in the main round. The negative trend of the second half series continued in the relegation round. As a result, after an eight-day double round, Bremerhaven was surprisingly bottom of the table in the relegation round and was relegated from the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga .

For a long time there was uncertainty in which league the club would compete in the 2012/13 season. As a sporty relegated team, the team had to wait a long time to see whether last year's sporting champion, the Landshut Cannibals , would be promoted or the Tölzer Löwen would exercise their right of promotion as champions of the league. Because both clubs ultimately remained in their leagues and the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga set the goal of playing with 14 clubs in the near future, the penguins stayed in the league. At the end of last season, Leidborg had to take his hat off and make way for Mike Stewart . It was only when the league membership was established that the penguins were able to work intensively on putting together the roster.

The 2012/13 season went very well for the Fischtown Pinguins until the end of the first half series, after 24 games the team was at the top of the 2nd Bundesliga with 17 wins and only seven defeats. Until then, they had the best attack in the league with 94 goals. In the course of the second half of the season, the team stayed in third place for a long time before they finished the main round in fifth due to a weak phase. In the main round, the penguins had the best average attendance of all clubs with 3,009 spectators. In the first play-off round there was a duel with the Tower Stars from Ravensburg. The first game was lost with 1: 8, the following duels with one goal difference each. With a 0: 3 deficit in the play-off series, Bremerhaven managed to win the following three duels, the sixth game of the series was won 8: 1 in the home arena. The last, seventh, playoff was lost 2-1 in Ravensburg and sealed the end.

In the following 2013/14 season , the penguins were in 5th place in the DEL2 table after half of the main round . At the end of the round, the team around coach Mike Stewart reached the first place in the table, which was also defended in the following short intermediate round. Bremerhaven survived the first play-off round with 4-1 victories over Lausitzer Füchse . In the semifinals, the EV Landshut was eliminated 4: 3, the decisive seventh game the Fischtown Pinguins won at home 2: 1 after extra time. In the final, the Pinguins met the defending champion, the Bietigheim Steelers , who were defeated 4-1. The REV won the second championship of the second German division and became the first champion of the newly founded DEL2.

At the end of January 2016, Bremerhaven parted ways with head coach Benoit Doucet , who had taken office before the start of the 2015/16 season. At the time of the split they were second in the DEL2. The club management explained the decision as follows: “(…) we fear that the coach, despite his great commitment, lacks the experience to lead the team through the finals.” Thomas Popiesch was hired as the new coach.

Admission to the DEL

For the 2016/17 season, the Fischtown Pinguins received a license for Germany's top division, the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). The Hamburg Freezers stopped playing in May 2016, the 14th and last DEL license was then awarded to the Fischtown Pinguins. They were the only DEL2 club that had participated in the DEL licensing process. On the third matchday of the 2016/17 DEL season, the Fischtown Pinguins achieved their first victory in the top German division (3-1 against Iserlohn). The main round of the 2016/17 DEL season was finished in tenth place under coach Popiesch, so Bremerhaven was qualified as a league newcomer for the first playoff round. The series against ERC Ingolstadt was won with two victories (4: 1 and 6: 5) and they moved into the quarter-finals against defending champions Munich. In this series, however, the penguins remained without a win and ended their season after four defeats against the favorites from the Bavarian capital.

In the 2017/18 season, Bremerhaven made it back to the championship round, but again they met Munich in the quarter-finals and lost with 1: 4 wins.

European successes

As the champion of the newly founded DEL2, Bremerhaven was able to take part in the European IIHF Continental Cup , the second highest competition after the Champions Hockey League . Thanks to its placement in the world rankings, the REV only entered the tournament in the second round. Thanks to the successful application, the second round took place from October 17th to 19th, 2014 in the Bremerhaven ice arena . At the start, the Pinguins won against the winner of the first round CSKA Sofia 6-2. The Dutch from Tilburg were left behind with 4-0. The decisive match for group victory came on the last day of the match with a duel with the previously undefeated Belfast Giants . Bremerhaven won 4-2 and surprisingly reached the semi-finals.

One of the two semi-final tournaments took place in Ritten, Italy, from November 21 to 23, 2014. At the start, the Fischtown Pinguins lost 3: 2 to the Kazakh champions Pavlodar . Despite a 2-0 lead after two-thirds, coach Mike Stewart's team conceded three late goals within seven minutes. In the second game Bremerhaven looked like the sure winner with a 1-0 lead until shortly before the end. But the Italian champions Ritten Sport equalized 17 seconds before the final whistle. Andrew McPherson scored the acclaimed winner in the penalty shootout. Bremerhaven now needed a win in the last game against the champions from Denmark, Herning, and at the same time had to hope for a defeat by Ritten against the previously undefeated Kazakhs. Ritten lost 4-0 to Pavlodar. And after a 0-1 deficit, the Pinguins made it to second place in the final table with a 2-1 win over Herning. Again McPherson was the winning goal scorer. The sensation was perfect with the entry into the final.

In the 17-year history of the Continental Cup, only the multiple DEL champions Eisbären Berlin in 1997 and 1999 and the Düsseldorfer EG in 1998 have made it into the final.

The super final took place in Bremerhaven from January 9th to 11th, 2015. In the first game there was a revenge against Pavlodar from Kazakhstan. In a turbulent game, the REV managed to play out a 4-2 lead after a 2-1 deficit. Pavlodar equalized with the second goal within five minutes in the 56th minute of the game. But Marian Dejdar made it 5: 4 in the 59th minute of the game. Against the Belarusian champions Njoman Hrodna there was a clear defeat in the second game with 2: 6. So it was clear before the last game day, even if Hrodna should lose the third game after two wins, Bremerhaven could not overtake the Belarusians even with a win due to the direct comparison. Bremerhaven beat the Ducs d'Angers from France 3-2 after a penalty through the decisive goal from McPherson. Hrodna secured the victory of the Continentals Cup with a third win 4: 3 after a penalty and was thus allowed to participate in next year's Champions Hockey League .
