Jan Urbas (born January 26, 1989 in Ljubljana , SR Slovenia ) is a Slovenian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Fischtown Pinguins since April 2017 .
Career
Jan Urbas began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of HDD Olimpija Ljubljana , where he was active until 2006. He also made his debut for the club's professional team in the Slovenian ice hockey league in the 2005/06 season , scoring 18 points in 27 games, including eleven goals. Then the winger moved to the youth department of the Swedish club Malmö Redhawks , for whose professional team he was on the ice from 2008 to 2011 in the HockeyAllsvenskan , the second Swedish division. At European level, he also made four appearances in the European Trophy for Malmö in preparation for the 2010/11 season .
For the 2011/12 season Urbas was committed by Växjö Lakers Hockey from the Elitserien . For this he played only two games in his first season, before he was able to earn a regular place in the 2012/13 season . In 2013 he moved to the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) for EHC Red Bull Munich .
In the summer of 2014 he took part in the Washington Capitals training camp , but received no contract in North America. At the end of September 2014 he was signed by the Klagenfurt AC from the Austrian ice hockey league . He stayed there for only two months until he joined VIK Västerås HK from HockeyAllsvenskan in November 2014 .
In the 2016/17 season he played again in the Austrian league for Villacher SV . There he developed into the club's strongest goalscorer and at the end of the main round was sixth in the league with 27 goals. He left the VSV after the season and switched to the Fischtown Pinguins in the DEL.
International
For Slovenia, Urbas took part in the junior division of the U18 World Junior Championships in Division I in 2007 and the U20 World Junior Championships in Division I in 2008 and 2009 .
In the senior division, he was in his country's squad for the first time at the World Cup in Division I in 2010 . He also played in the top division for his colors in 2013 , 2015 and 2017 and in 2014 , when he was elected to the all-star team of the tournament with the best plus / minus balance, in 2016 , when he was the top scorer in both the All-Star-Team was chosen as the most valuable player of the tournament , and in 2018 , when he was voted the best striker of the tournament and together with the two British Ben O'Connor and Brett Perlini third-best scorer behind the Kazakhs Roman Startschenko and the Slovenian Miha Verlič was in Division I. With his achievements in 2014 and 2016, he made a significant contribution to the immediate return of the Slovenes to the top division.
He also took part with Slovenia in qualifying for the 2014 Winter Olympics, in which he prevailed with his country. He then played with the team at the Winter Games in Sochi itself and took a surprising seventh place among twelve teams with her. He also successfully participated in the Olympic qualification for the 2018 Winter Games with Slovenia and then played again at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang himself.
