Tomáš Pöpperle (born October 10, 1984 in Broumov , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey goalkeeper of German descent who has been under contract with the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven in the DEL since 2017 .
Career
Pöpperle played 96 games with the U18 team of HC Sparta Prague between 1999 and 2001. He played 89 games with the U20 team from 2001 to 2004. In the 2003/04 season he played next to the U20 team of HC Sparta Prague in the first Czech ice hockey league five games for HC Berounští Medvědi and two games in the second-highest Czech league for HC Příbram . In the 2004/05 season he was again for HC Berounští Medvědi in goal and played 16 games before moving to the Eisbären Berlin in summer 2005 , with whom he won the German championship on April 17, 2006 .
In September 2006 he completed a preparation game with the NHL team Columbus Blue Jackets , which selected him in the fifth round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft at position 131. The season 2006/06 he played with the farm team of the Blue Jackets, the Syracuse Crunch , in the American Hockey League . There he formed the goalkeeper team together with Ty Conklin .
At the end of January 2007 he was appointed to the NHL team for the first time because the goalkeepers Pascal Leclaire and Fredrik Norrena were injured. On February 2, 2007, Pöpperle was used for the first time in the NHL. In the game against the Calgary Flames he was substituted on after 35 minutes when the score was 1-5. The game ended 2-6 and Pöpperle was able to fend off seven of eight shots. For the 2008/09 season he then moved back to his home country for HC Sparta Prague. After one season and 41 league games, he was loaned to HC Plzeň for the 2009/10 season. After the 2010 playoffs, he returned to Sparta.
In May 2012 he moved within Prague to HC Lev Prague from the Continental Hockey League , where he signed a two-year contract. A year later, after about 30 missions in the KHL, he was loaned from HC Lev to Sparta Prague. After HC Lev left the KHL, Pöpperle was looking for a new club and found it in the newly founded HK Sotschi . After a season in Sochi, he returned to his home club Sparta in 2015.
For the 2017/2018 season, Pöpperle moved to Germany to the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven in the German Ice Hockey League . In the first season he reached the playoff quarter-finals with the Bremerhaveners, where they then had to give way to Munich.
Apparently the Czech goalie liked it so much that he immediately extended his contract on the North Sea coast.
