history

The Mundenhof estate was first mentioned in a document on September 12, 864. This is a deed of gift in which the owner, priest Rumolt, bequeathed this agriculturally used Muntichova estate to the St. Gallen monastery . From 1294 to 1806 Mundenhofen was owned by the Günterstal monastery and after the dissolution of the monastery fell to the Grand Duchy of Baden as part of secularization , which in turn sold it to the University of Freiburg in 1808 . The city of Freiburg acquired a large part of the site in 1889 and wanted to use it for agriculture. After the city had acquired large areas in the vicinity in 1891, the Freiburg Rieselfelder, a natural sewage treatment plant for the city, was set up and managed from the Mundenhof. These areas then had to be expanded to 320 hectares in 1920. It was one of the largest farms in Baden-Württemberg . At the best of times, 400 cattle were kept, producing around 400,000 liters of milk. There was also pig breeding and agriculture. In 1985 the trickle operation was stopped, so the wastewater fee was also omitted, together with the fall in prices, the operation was no longer economical. In order to survive, it was converted into an ecological model company that still covers the animal enclosure's straw and feed requirements. From 1992, parts of the Rieselfelder have created the new Rieselfeld district with a size of 118 hectares, as well as the Rieselfeld nature reserve , which lies between the district and the Mundenhof.

The grounds of the manor, although owned by the city of Freiburg, were in the Umkirch district until December 31, 1977 . Due to a referendum among the residents, it was politically affiliated to the city of Freiburg on January 1, 1978. As a partial compensation, Umkirch was given a smaller municipal area to the west of the A5 motorway , which formerly belonged to the Freiburg district of Lehen .

The silo demolished in 2020

A silo for feed maize had stood on the estate since the 1960s. Since there has been no dairy farm since 1989, it was used as a wood store, in 2004 and 2006 also as a sound room or sculpture hall. The storks that inhabited the top of the silo had built their nests bigger and bigger that a storm tore down the silo lid in January 2020. When rust and other damage were discovered, the decision was made in March to demolish the building. There should be new quarters for the storks.

Animal enclosure

From the year 1968, a part of the site has been transformed into a small zoo, which in contrast to larger systems of this kind animal enclosure is called, with 38 hectares it is the largest animal park in Baden-Württemberg . The then mayor Eugen Keidel strongly promoted this project and opened the enclosure on September 28, 1968. In 1971 the Association for the Promotion of the Friborg Zoo was founded. Today mainly domestic breeds from all over the world and some wild animals are shown here. It is of particular concern to show and care for domestic animal species threatened with disappearing. The outdoor area is divided into eight areas, which house the different animal species, arranged according to continent. The zoo includes peacocks , gibbon and long-tailed monkeys , emus , ostriches , alpacas , yaks and llamas . You can see around 30 animal species with a total of around 180 animals. In a former horse stable of the facility, the Verein der Aquarien- und Terrariumfreunde eV operates a show aquarium facility with pools from 500 l to 3000 l in which there are five seawater, seven freshwater and three terrariums. This facility can also be visited free of charge and is only financed through donations. In June 2015, the brown bear Joschi had to be put down because of osteoarthritis and cancer. His twin brother Janosch (both * 1986) had already been put to sleep in July 2011 due to osteoarthritis.

The bear enclosure has been redesigned and will be available to a pair of red marten in the future . After a long wait, a female arrived in September 2019, the male arrived a little late in December.

In addition, the animal and nature adventure park offers an extensive network of paths with various viewpoints from which you can see the city of Freiburg and its surroundings well. In addition to a restaurant, there are also playgrounds. Storks also nest on the site, and their nest can be observed using a webcam .

The small zoo is open every day around the clock. Admission is free, the enclosure is partly financed by donations and the parking fees that have to be paid on the site. The city of Freiburg finances the majority. The park can be reached by bus number 19 without a car, although it does not run on Saturdays and otherwise runs four to seven times a day. You have to walk 1.8 kilometers from the terminus of line 5 in Rieselfeld.

In the meantime, the animal enclosure has reached its limits from the number of visitors of 8,000 a day, especially on weekends. Visitors come from all over the region and even from Alsace . In 2018 there were 390,000 of them. Between 2013 and 2018, the number of visitors increased by 34 percent. The city therefore wants to expand the enclosure between the motorway and the nature reserve, especially since the new Dietenbach district is being built next to it. In 2019 [out of date] the expansion of the restaurant and toilets will be completed, in 2020 the depot.

KonTiKi

With the aim of bringing city children from all social classes into contact with animals and nature, the educational project “KonTiKi” (contact animal-child) was founded, in which children from the age of six have the opportunity to enjoy plants and animals in their free time to get to know, to treat them respectfully, to take responsibility and to have social experiences.

Tent music festival

Next to the area of the animal enclosure there is a designed open space, where the international tent music festival (ZMF) takes place every year . It is one of the oldest events of its kind in Europe and attracts numerous music fans to the circus tents and the Spiegelzelt with its mixture of classical serious and modern light music . For the reception of refugees stood here from November 2015 to March 2016 winterized tents halls and housed up to 280 refugees. In order to free up space for the ZMF, the halls were relocated to the trade fair .
