Brühl is a north-western district of Freiburg im Breisgau .

Brühl consists of the approx. 90 hectare urban district 231 Brühl-Güterbahnhof in the northeast and the 1,000 hectare urban district 232 Brühl industrial area in the west and north as well as the urban district Brühl-Notification 233 in the southeast. It is largely located on the former Zähringer and Betzenhauser districts. Brühl emerged from around the end of the 19th century in the course of the industrialization of Freiburg. The Freiburg airfield is also located within the boundaries of the district .

Neighboring districts are Hochdorf in the northwest, Zähringen and Herdern in the east, the Stühlinger in the south and Mooswald and Landwasser in the southwest. In the north, the district also borders on the districts of Vörstetten in the Emmendingen district and Gundelfingen in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district .

In the awareness of the population, the delimitation of the Brühl district does not go hand in hand with the boundaries of the official districts. The northern industrial area , which makes up the lion's share of the district, is viewed as a separate district, and the airfield , the new trade fair or the university's technical faculty are not associated with the district. Even earlier, the southern district of the city was commonly assigned to the Brühl district, although it belonged to the Stühlinger district. Since January 1, 2015, the city district has been assigned to the Brühl district.

Spatial structure

Districts

The three urban districts that make up Brühl are very unequal: The area of the industrial area, which consists of the actual industrial area north, the airfield, the new trade fair center, the technical faculty of the university and, in the north-west, forest (Markwald and Mooswald), is in terms of area a good ten times larger than the freight yard district. According to the number of inhabitants, the freight yard and Beurnung districts are larger than the industrial area.

topography

The Brühler district is very flat. The only two elevations are artificially created. On the one hand, the renatured Wolfsbuck rubble dump at the airfield, which also consists of the rubble from the bombing of Freiburg in World War II, and on the other hand, the closed Eichelbuck waste dump in the north of the Mooswald, equipped with photovoltaic cells.

Infrastructure

Old customs yard

As an industrial area and trade fair location, Brühl has a generously designed road network and also some industrial tracks for the freight railway. A passenger train station is located on the edge of the district on the Breisacher Bahn in the southwest with three stops. The use of the freight railway for passenger transport has been discussed for years, but the implementation has so far failed due to the country's reduced investment funds. The tram lines 2 and 4 of the Freiburger Verkehrs AG and numerous bus lines operate in Brühl. The airport , which can only be used to a limited extent, also contributes to the attractiveness of the location.

The track stock at the freight yard has shrunk considerably in the last few decades. Many tracks were shut down and dismantled. It is used as the transfer point for the rolling road . In the area of the freight station, which had been cleared of old buildings, a student dormitory, gas stations, hotels, offices and service companies were built alongside apartments.

Business

Numerous large companies are located in the northern industrial area, such as Pfizer (pharmaceuticals), Cerdia (cigarette filters, formerly Rhodia) and TDK-Micronas (microchip technology), as well as the energy supply company Badenova . With Ikea , Möbel Braun and XXXLutz, there are large furniture stores in the immediate vicinity of each other in the west of the area on the edge of the airfield. Manufacturing and service providers are also represented. The industrial area continues in the adjacent Gundelfingen to the northeast.

Culture

Tower cafe

The New Fair has become an important location for Freiburg's economic and cultural life. In the south are the Freiburg main cemetery and the Kandelhof cinema . At the end of 2018, construction of the new football stadium began at the airfield.

At Zähringer Straße 44 there is a unique building, the tower café. The turret with a petrol station canopy was built in 1951 based on a design by the Freiburg architect Wilhelm Schelkes. Today it stands between residential buildings behind a soundproof wall made of glass and belongs to a restaurant. It was actually planned for the general agency of the car manufacturer Borgward and has been a cultural monument since 1986.
