The Freiburger Verkehrs AG (VAG) is a local transport company in Freiburg im Breisgau . The company, which is wholly owned by the city of Freiburg, operates the trams (lines 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) , which opened in 1901, as well as 20  bus routes with a 210-kilometer route network. In addition, VAG has been operating the Schauinslandbahn, which opened in 1930, since 1982 .

With the exception of the Schauinslandbahn and Safer Traffic night services, the tariff of the Regio-Verkehrsverbund Freiburg (RVF), of which VAG is a co-partner, applies on all VAG lines . The RVF coordinates public transport in Freiburg im Breisgau and the neighboring districts of Emmendingen and Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald .

VAG has its headquarters with administration and depot in the Haid industrial park in the Sankt Georgen district (Besançonallee 99, 79111 Freiburg). In Salzstrasse 3, near Bertoldsbrunnen , it operates the Pluspunkt customer center and another customer center in the bike station at the main train station .

history

VAG logo until September 2017

The forerunner of the VAG was the "Directorate of the Electricity Works and the Tram" , which was founded on October 1, 1899. On October 14, 1901, the horse-drawn bus routes that had existed since 1891 were replaced by the electric tram. On January 1, 1974, this management became part of the VAG. On October 1, 1984, the environmental card (today's Regiokarte) was introduced, which was instrumental in the success of public transport in the Freiburg area.

On January 1, 2009, the electricity supply for the Freiburg tram and the Schauinsland railway was completely converted to green electricity . This means that VAG receives more than 13 gigawatt hours of climate-neutral electricity from hydropower, wind power and solar energy from the regional energy supplier badenova .

In 2013, VAG put the first flywheel storage system into operation at Moosweiher in Landwasser , which stores braking energy from light rail vehicles and transfers it to accelerating railcars. The second flywheel storage facility was inaugurated in Zähringen in 2018 .

Stops

Names

Since 2019, Freiburg companies or institutions in industrial parks have been able to rent the names of the stops in front of their door. You pay 500 euros once (with signs) and 7500 euros annually. You can always rent for one or more timetable periods. This rule does not apply to existing company names such as Ganter or IKEA .

announcement

From 2005 to 2018, the announcement of the stops in the vehicles was spoken by actor Peter Haug-Lamersdorf. With changes and network expansions, he always had to record in the studio. From 2014, the VAG digitized the announcements of individual stops with a software for 1000 euros, which was designed for the US market. The voice of Michaela Albrecht, a VAG employee, has been heard during the announcements since October 2018. They were also digitized, this time with a text-to-speech system for just under 50,000 euros.

Sometimes the individual lines run differently. For example, line 17 serves the route Littenweiler - Sudetenstraße - Reinhold-Schneider-Straße - Littenweiler, which means that the entire branch to Kappel is omitted.

In 2017, VAG demanded a higher cost share from the surrounding communities of Au, Gundelfingen, Horben and Merzhausen, otherwise bus operations would be discontinued. Since this was not possible for the communities, they looked for other solutions. As a result, the VAG discontinued line 12 to Merzhausen.

Night traffic

The night traffic under the name "Safer Traffic" was operated with seven night bus routes that ran on Saturday and Sunday nights and before public holidays. These lines, which were named after the planets of the solar system , last started at the central bus station at Freiburg Central Station (until March 15, 2014 at Bertoldsbrunnen) and made it possible to reach the surrounding districts and communities between 1 and 5 a.m. almost every hour.

Since December 14, 2014, the tram lines (except for line 2) have been operated every 30 minutes (from Bertoldsbrunnen from 1 a.m. to 4:30 a.m.) on the nights on Saturday, Sunday and before selected public holidays. The night traffic of the light rail is supplemented by the night bus routes N46 and N47. Günterstal and more distant towns are also approached by taxis that are available at the transfer stations. The regular RVF tariff applies to the trams. The night buses N46, N47 and the connection taxes cost 4 euros.

Since the end of 2017, as a reaction to the Maria Ladenburger murder , there has been a women's night taxi , as was the case from 1991 to 2003 . Every night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. women can use it for all trips within the Freiburg city area. It costs 7 euros.

VAG has been testing two electric buses since the end of 2019 . These have been traveling on line 27 between Herdern and Europaplatz since February 7, 2020, where they are attached to the charging station after every second cycle. The two buses with infrastructure cost 1.8 million euros. They are twice as expensive as diesel buses, but there are grants from the Federal Ministry of Transport . By spring 2022, 15 more e-buses are to expand the fleet.

Individual vehicles

Since 2013, VAG has been providing three Renault Kangoo ZEs to customers of the furniture store free of charge in cooperation with Ikea Freiburg . In 2018, three electric cargo bikes were added, each of which can transport up to 180 kilograms.

With the city, VAG has been operating a new bike rental system with Frelo since May 17, 2019 .

WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS

After a successful test run, all 65 buses have been equipped with WiFi since summer 2019 . The light rail vehicles (except for the five oldest) followed at the end of the year.
