Women taxi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a woman taxi or night taxi for Women offers are referred for women, in the late evening or at night with taxes at reduced rates or a fixed price to be promoted within a certain range.

history

The idea for this arose in 1983 in West Berlin in connection with a protest movement that arose after a student was raped and murdered by serial killer Thomas Rung on her way home one night . It was picked up in 40 other German cities by groups against violence against women and local politicians. With the women's taxi subsidized by cities or municipalities at the normal price of local public transport , women who do not have the financial means for a taxi should be given the opportunity to go out in the evening without being endangered. The background for the offer of a women's taxi or night taxi for women was the feelings of insecurity expressed by women about moving in public spaces at night, which has a limiting effect on their mobility. A representative study carried out nationwide by the magazine Stern in 1984 showed that 71 percent of women and 22 percent of men in Germany felt threatened if they walked at night.

The first night taxi for women was decided in 1985 by the municipal council in Tübingen , and the first model test was carried out in Bielefeld . In 2015, the parliamentary group of the Greens in the Munich City Council submitted the application for subsidized women's taxes, which, following the example of Hanover, have been supposed to bring women home at night from the next stop on their bus or train since 1994.

In Freiburg im Breisgau there has been a women's taxi again since December 2017 in response to the Maria Ladenburger murder . It happened before from 1991 to 2003.

For a number of years there have also been women's taxis in other countries / cities, for example Dubai and India , which are also controlled by women. The Azad Foundation in India trains women to be taxi drivers.

In Heidelberg (since 1992) and Mannheim (since 2019) special women's night taxis are offered from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. These must be requested separately from the participating taxi centers. In Heidelberg, the offer is only valid within the city area for women aged 14 and over with official residence in Heidelberg, with a fixed-price ticket to be purchased in advance. In Mannheim, the offer is valid for all women aged 14 and over, as long as the journey begins in the Mannheim city area. Each trip is subsidized by the city with a fixed price. The participating taxi companies also undertake to take part in special training courses for their drivers.

criticism

Since drivers of women's taxis are not particularly qualified and do not have to present a certificate of good conduct, there is also sexual harassment of women by the drivers of women's taxis in individual cases.

The explicit discrimination and disadvantage of men, who have to finance their taxi journey in full themselves, is justified by the fact that the women taxi actually compensates for existing disadvantages of women.
