The Badenova AG & Co. KG (proper spelling: badenova) is the largest power company in southern Baden with headquarters in Freiburg .

history

Badenova main building in Freiburg im Breisgau

The company was formed in 2001 from a merger of six energy suppliers:

  • Freiburg energy and water supply (FEW),
  • Remote gas supply Mittelbaden (MIBA),
  • Stadtwerke Lahr,
  • Energy supply Oberbaden (EVO)
  • Badische Gas- und Elektrizitätsversorgungs AG Lörrach and
  • Gasbetriebe GmbH Emmendingen (GBG).

The trigger for the merger was the liberalization of the electricity market and the associated concern of the municipal utilities that they would go under against the overwhelming power of corporations in competition. The founding board members were Adalbert Häge, Mathias Nikolay, Horst Gute and Harald Seidelmann. At the beginning the company had 1,175 employees. In the following years, Badenova continued to develop into the leading energy and environmental supplier in the region.

In 2002 the central network control room was set up in Freiburg. In the years that followed, the company took part in many renewable energy projects . Examples of this are the commissioning of the wind turbines on the Schauinsland and 2003 on the Roßkopf . In 2004 the roof of the home stadium of SC Freiburg was equipped with solar modules . In 2005, Badenova installed 15 natural gas filling stations between the Upper Rhine and the northern Black Forest . From 2007, Badenova changed its corporate strategy towards a consistent ecological focus and also founded the heating subsidiary Badenova Wärmeplus . In the following year, 2008, Badenova took a further step towards the energy transition: the shareholders and the supervisory board issued the regional order for the energy transition and all of Badenova's private customers were converted to nuclear-free energy. Badenova Wärmeplus has had its first biogas power plant in Neuried since 2009 . In 2010 Badenova then started the so-called kompas participation model for municipalities . In 2012, Badenova's new biogas plant in Bremgarten went into operation. The plant has an annual production capacity of 50,000 megawatt hours of biomethane , making it the largest of its kind in Baden-Württemberg at the time . In the same year, the Freiburg energy supplier founded Badenova Wind GmbH, whose primary concern is to develop decentralized regenerative energy generation and to allow the region on the southern Upper Rhine and its residents to participate in it through a public participation model. At the same time, they submit to a sustainability concept developed jointly with the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND), whose special focus is on nature and species protection . In 2007, Badenova established the network company Bn Netze GmbH . Sales partnerships with Vodafone and other telecommunications companies have also existed since 2013 . Badenova also received the environmental seal from TÜV Saarland . On January 1, 2015, Badenova was realigned according to business areas.

Badenova's shareholder communities, over 90 cities and communities between the Upper Rhine and the Northern Black Forest, awarded the energy service provider the so-called regional contract for this as early as 2008 . This mandate obliges the company to advance the energy future as a social project for the entire region and to implement it with partners. Badenova innovation fund

The Badenova Innovation Fund for Climate and Water Protection supports projects for climate and water protection.

history

The innovation fund was founded in 2001 by the shareholders at the time as part of the merger negotiations for the establishment of Badenova AG. The motivation for this came from the founding shareholders, who saw the energy transition as a major public task. They took the view that the population of the South Baden region should be involved in the energy transition, which should be made possible by distributing part of the company's profits.

General

The badenova innovation fund primarily supports regional climate and water protection projects in southern Baden. Every year, 3% of Badenova's corporate profit (approx. 1.5 million euros) is invested in exemplary projects in order to enable new and ecologically sensible climate and water protection projects with exemplary character. The primary objective is to promote ecologically innovative projects for water protection and energy saving, rational use of energy as well as regenerative energy generation, which would not be profitable on their own. Only extraordinary measures are to be funded, but not measures that are to be regarded as regular operational tasks. Since the start of the innovation fund in 2001, 28 million euros have been received in 256 environmental projects. These projects have triggered investments of well over 126 million euros in environmental and climate protection issues in the South Baden region. The Badenova Innovationsfonds has been headed by Richard Tuth (Badenova AG) since June 2018.

Application criteria

In addition to municipalities, associations, organizations, associations and companies, private individuals can also apply for funding. The most important criteria for funding projects under the Innovation Fund are: degree of innovation, ecological impact and multiplier effect. All applications are checked by an independent advisory board and the best are recommended for funding.

Selection process

In order to ensure the broadest possible integration of technical, ecological and regional political expertise, this committee is made up of scientists, engineers and environmental experts. The shareholders of Badenova and thus the shareholder communities and Thüga AG determine the composition of the committee. When the expert advisory board has examined and assessed the projects, it passes on its recommendations to the municipal advisory board, in which the interests of the cities and municipalities are bundled. Ultimately, the decision is made by the Badenova Supervisory Board.

Crowdfunding

Badenova maintains the Black Forest Crowd project , which started on December 9, 2019. This gives people from the region the opportunity to present various ideas or projects and to finance their implementation with the support of many people from the region. As a company in this region, Badenova already supports various projects, but by no means all of them can be taken into account. This is where the Black Forest crowd from Badenova, who would like to see themselves as a facilitator and platform operator, comes in. The principle behind it: an idea is made possible by many supporters from the region. Anyone can become a sponsor with a small amount. All supporters form the crowd together and can support a regional project. In the first three months after the start of the Black Forest crowd, five projects were planned and over 7,000 € were collected by 226 supporters in the first three projects. Badenova provides 500 € per month in a funding pot.
