The Offenburg University of Technology, Economics and Media, with its headquarters in Offenburg and a branch in Gengenbach, is a University of Applied Sciences in the state of Baden-Württemberg .

history

The previous institution, the State Engineering School, with the courses in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, was founded in 1964. From 1971 the university was called Fachhochschule Offenburg (FHO). In 1978 the range of courses was expanded to include business courses, which initiated the Gengenbach campus. In 1996 the fourth faculty of media and information was created. The Graduate School was founded in 2000 and to this day oversees and coordinates four international courses. As part of the conversion to the Bachelor / Master study system ( Bologna process ), the University of Applied Sciences was renamed the Offenburg University in early 2005.

Locations

On Campus Offenburg faculties electrical engineering, medical and computer science (EMI), Mechanical and Process Engineering (M + V), and Media and Information (M + I) are located. In Offenburg there are five buildings, the newest of which was completed in 2014. There are over 50 laboratories in them.

In Gengenbach, the Faculty of Business Administration and Industrial Engineering (B + W) is located in the former Benedictine monastery Gengenbach and in the educational campus that was inaugurated in 2013.

Before the new media building was completed in 2009, there was the AV studio at the university in Ohlsbach .

Faculties and courses of study

In the four faculties of the Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, 26 bachelor's degree programs and 21 master's degree programs are offered.

The courses with the additional designation "plus" are offered together with the PH Freiburg . In these courses of study, the Offenburg University of Applied Sciences provides technical, economic and media-specific knowledge. Pedagogical skills are also learned at the PH Freiburg. These “plus” courses qualify for a master’s course with the additional designation “Vocational Education”. This polyvalent course gives students the choice of whether they want to work as an engineer, research engineer or teacher at vocational schools. In 2010, among other things, the "Medical Technology" course was newly introduced.

Student and research projects

The Schluckspecht 3 at the Shell Eco Marathon 2007

The umbrella organization for research at the Offenburg University of Applied Sciences is the Institute for Applied Research (IAF). The IAF coordinates the various application-related research work at the university.

Probably the most famous project of the university is the " Schluckspecht " . The aim was to build a vehicle that uses as little fuel as possible. The Schluckspecht was the first German participant in the Shell Eco-Marathon in 1998 . In the following period it received several awards and in 2008 won the fuel cell category. Another vehicle project is the Blackforest Formula Racing Team in cooperation with the DH BW Stuttgart Campus Horb (formerly BA Horb ). The team builds its own racing car from an economic point of view and regularly takes part in the Formula Student .

A student project that brought it to some German cinemas in 2003 is the animated film Die Helden von Bern . Here, with the help of Lego figures, the soccer World Cup final of 1954 is recreated.

In 2008 the robot soccer team magmaOffenburg was founded, which has been successfully participating in national and international competitions since then and annually organizes the 3D simulation league at the RoboCup German Open . magmaOffenburg was the first team in the RoboCup 3D simulation league to use the Java programming language and publish the program code under an open source license.

The medium-length film, Am Tag die Sterne , by director and author Simon Schneckenburger , made as part of a thesis at the university, was nominated at several film festivals in 2017 and won, among other things, the German Young Talent Film Award at the Up-and-Coming Film Festival.
