Every two years since November 2005, the German competition of the up-and-coming Int. Film Festival Hannover awarded the German Young Talent Award. A well-known jury awards a total of three films, taking into account the age groups up to 16 years, 17 to 22 and 23 to 27 years in the 'Director' category. In the assessment, the focus is not on technical perfection, but on originality and independence of the idea and cinematic implementation as well as innovative strength.

The prize is awarded as a transparent FilmKomet together with prize money and a two-year producer sponsorship and is donated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Successful producers from the film and television industry have sponsored the company since 2007. This is intended to strengthen the sustainability of the award. There are various forms of funding such as B. Coaching for new films.

The godparents are Regina Ziegler (Ziegler Film), Volker Engel (uncharted territory), Peter Rommel (Peter Rommel Filmproduktion, i.a. Halbe Staircase , Cloud 9 ) and, since November 2009, Christian Becker (Rat Pack Filmproduktion, i.a. Die Welle , Vorstadtkrokodile ) Hans W. Geißendörfer (Geißendörfer film and television production, including ARD cult series Lindenstrasse ) and Bettina Brokemper ( Heimatfilm ).

The German Young Talent Award is an initiative of the Association for the Nationwide Student Film and Video Center in Hanover and cooperates with film competitions for schoolchildren and young people selected nationwide. The organizers of these competitions nominate filmmakers from among their group of participants, who then enter the competition together with the films selected by up-and-coming .
