University history

The history of the university goes back to the year 1776, when a drawing school was founded, to which an engraving class was attached in 1828 with the start of industrialization. In 1860 the former drawing school became a trade school with its own specialist department for goldsmiths and silversmiths. In 1909 the Royal College for the Precious Metals Industry was split off . She moved into the newly constructed building designed by the architect Martin Elsaesser in the southwest of the city center, which is still the location of the university today. The program of the then director Walter Klein was in line with Hermann Muthesius , co-founder of the Deutscher Werkbund, striving for progress .

The First World War in 1914 caused a sudden drop in the number of students. However, the school quickly recovered from the chaos of war. The school received a new constitution in 1923 and, through an initiative of the Deutscher Werkbund, became a state higher technical school for the precious metal industry in 1924 . This was followed by influences from Bauhaus greats such as Josef Albers , Lászlo Moholy-Nagy and Wilhelm Wagenfeld , among other things at the endeavors of Rector Walter Klein . Just two years later, the first "Industrial Design Class" was set up - under the impression of Walter Klein's trip to Dessau. After the end of the Second World War, it was renamed the State Higher Technical School for Precious Metals in 1950. Two years later, the “Industrial Design Class” was resumed by the new headmaster Walter Lochmüller and became one of the most renowned in its field. In 1960 the class was expanded to become a design department .

In 1965 it was converted into the Schwäbisch Gmünd State Art School . After the emphasis on craftsmanship so far, there was a strong focus on design issues. There were

Industrial design, graphic design and jewelry design courses established. They formed the basis for the College of Design , which was established in 1971 and whose first rector was Karl Dittert . He took on the task of leading the university away from artistic to design programs, which refers to the training concept of the Ulm School of Design. The previous institutions were still clearly oriented towards the local commercial structure with their range of courses, whereas the educational mandate of the technical college was already to be seen nationwide.

In 1983, the University of Applied Sciences adopted a new basic structure that refrained from dividing it into separate departments. The three newly established courses in product design, jewelery design and visual design were no longer strictly delimited and permeable. In addition, all courses were based on the foundation of independent design principles. In 1987, the focus on media was introduced in the visual communication course. In the winter semester of 1989, the focus on digital media was introduced, from which the current course in interaction design emerged in 2007 . The conversion of the previous diploma courses to the new bachelor courses took place in 2004. Since 2005 the University of Design has had the addition University of Applied Sciences in English .

During renovation work on the building in Rektor-Klaus-Straße, the university had temporarily moved to several locations within the city (e.g. Gmünd-TECH and Zapp) from 2010. After the renovation work was completed, the university returned to the regular building in autumn 2015.

Due to the steadily growing number of students at the university, a spatial expansion was created with the move to the new building on the Gamundia area between Schwäbisch Gmünd station and Stadtgarten .

The construction was carried out at the request of Rector Walter Klein , among others . The town council of Schwäbisch Gmünd decided in 1906 to add the trade museum and the Erhard antiquity collection to a possible new building. For this purpose, a suitable site was allocated on what was then the outskirts of the city on a hillside. The young architect Martin Elsaesser won the following public architectural competition, in which 132 designs were submitted . The interior of the building, which was inaugurated in July 1909, was mainly done by Franz Mutzenbecher , Jakob Brüllmann and Jakob Wilhelm Fehrle . Elsaesser carried out several expansion stages between 1923 and 1954. He delivered the draft for the increase shortly before his death, but he did not live to see the implementation. In 1968 the museum wing was transferred to the university.

In 1955 and 1992 there were interior renovations, 1987 renovations on the exterior.

During the construction work for the 100th anniversary, defects in the listed building were discovered, which resulted in a comprehensive renovation of the Alsatian building from 2010 to 2014. In two construction phases, all surface, structural and functional deficits were eliminated, and windows and insulation were renewed in order to reduce the building's energy consumption. Taking into account the monument protection, the Alsatian building was adapted to the requirements of a modern university study. In addition to the core renovation and the technical modernization, emphasis was placed on bringing the original building functions of the Art Nouveau building to light. After completion of the extensive renovation and modernization work and the resumption of teaching operations, the headquarters was ceremoniously handed over by the Ministry of Finance and Economics of Baden-Württemberg on July 9, 2015.

The bachelor's degree programs in communication and product design have been offered since 2004, and interaction design followed in 2007 . In 2014, the Strategic Design master’s program began operations and replaces the previously separate master’s programs Communication Planning and Design and Product Planning and Design . Since 2015, in cooperation with Aalen University, the university has been the first university in German-speaking countries to offer the Internet of Things bachelor's degree . Design of networked systems . All five courses are successfully accredited.

In the basic design subjects, the students deal with the categories of surface and space, light and color, time and movement and thus experience the regular relationships between perception and design. The focus here is on constructive and free drawing, typography , photography , film and multimedia .

The teaching materials offered include a. Design and media theory , sociology , design thinking, systems theory , ecology and environmental science , material and production techniques , semiotics and perception theory, project planning and management.

Internship semester

In the 5th semester, experience in companies, institutions or design offices in Germany or abroad should complement the theoretical content taught so far. The practical semester lasts 26 weeks and is an essential part of university education. It must be successfully completed before admission to the 6th semester.

Semester abroad

The SOCRATES and ERASMUS programs of the European Union support selected students who work for a semester at a European partner university or who want to take part in seminars or workshops there.
