The municipality ( Local Municipality ) Amahlathi is part of the Amathole District , Eastern Cape Province in South Africa . 122,778 inhabitants live in an area of ​​4,820 km² (as of 2011). The municipal administration is based in Stutterheim on the N6 national road .

Natural space

The community name is an isiXhosa term for "a place where there are many trees, a forest". Forestry is the main industry in the municipality.

The landscape of the municipality is characterized on the one hand by the partially wooded chains of the Amathole Mountains and on the other hand by their slightly undulating and almost treeless farmland ( grasslands ). The geological structure of the landscape consists of parts of the Karoo main basin and its subsoil is formed by sandstones and dolerite intrusions .

The first language was 92.2% IsiXhosa , 2.9% English and 1.9% Afrikaans.
