The Weingarten University of Education (PH Weingarten) is a university for prospective teachers in Weingarten, Upper Swabia, in the Ravensburg district , and offers courses in educational science. She has the right to confer doctorates and habilitation.

At the University of Education, which was founded in 1949 as a pedagogical institute, a total of more than 3000 students were trained for teaching at primary schools , secondary schools , secondary schools and special schools (basic studies only) in the 2012/13 winter semester . This offer is supplemented by additional courses as well as bachelor and master courses . Building on this, there is the possibility of a doctorate or habilitation . The university was granted the right to award doctorates in 1984, although the involvement of a university was still necessary for the first three years. In addition, courses of study are offered in cooperation with the Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences, which qualify both as engineers and trade teachers. One of the courses offered is elementary education, which deals with aspects of the education and upbringing of children between the ages of 0–12 and thus trains caregivers with specialist skills. Also new is the so far only BA / MA degree in media and education management in Germany.

The extensive campus of the PH Weingarten extends over several historical buildings of the monastery complex of the Weingarten Abbey on the Martinsberg, which was expanded in the Baroque and partly rebuilt . The PH uses the stately-looking “castle building”, the curved fish keeper's house and the former fruit box of the monastery as a university library . Also on the ancient monastery is the "Scientific Center" (NZ), a modern building that shares the PH with the University of Applied Sciences Ravensburg-Weingarten and seminar rooms, lecture halls and a cafeteria with wireless home -Access.

In addition, the PH Weingarten offers a wide range of cultural and sporting activities with regular theater performances, music evenings, author readings, public lectures and a wide range of university sports.

University management

After Margret Ruep was appointed ministerial director in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Baden-Württemberg in May 2011, Werner Knapp was initially appointed as acting rector. In December 2011, the university council unanimously elected him rector of the Weingarten University of Education. When he was inaugurated in February 2012, Knapp announced the goal of developing into an "educational university". Werner Knapp retired in October 2018.
