The International Lake Constance University IBH is the largest cross-university network in Europe. It enables the cooperation of 29 universities from Germany , Austria , Liechtenstein and Switzerland of the Euregio Bodensee in research, teaching and transfer. The IBH supports cross-border research projects on current and future challenges for the Lake Constance area. It coordinates the dialogue between science and practice, promotes the next generation of academics, enables innovations in teaching and supports joint offers of the university services.
In 1998, the International Lake Constance Conference, the conference of the countries and cantons bordering Lake Constance, commissioned its “Education, Science and Research” commission to initiate cross-border cooperation among the universities in the Lake Constance area. In order to realize this idea, the IBH was created. 29 universities are currently cooperating under their name.
network
The solution of socially relevant challenges through research and development projects is an important goal of the IBH. It supports projects in the fields of teaching, research and development, knowledge and technology transfer and structure formation in which at least two universities from at least two of the four member states are involved.
The students benefit from an expanded range of courses - since the start of the collaboration, ten innovative, cross-border master’s courses have been launched. In addition, the universities are open to all students from the region: they can use the canteens and libraries at every location as if they were registered on site. Foreign students from all over the world can attend summer schools together.
The member universities strengthen university cooperation by jointly developing services. For this purpose, there are working groups (e.g. on the topics of gender & diversity, career advancement, communication, knowledge and technology transfer and international) in which representatives of the member universities both exchange professional information within the network and offer events for a wider audience.
In the area of knowledge and technology transfer, there are structures for a practical dialogue between universities and companies in the region. The close cooperation between universities and business / society contributes to the formation of cross-border and cross-university research networks.
IBH Labs
In addition, on the initiative of the IBK “Education, Science and Research” commission, the IBH set up research and innovation networks of universities and practical partners from business and society (financed by Interreg V ABH). In three thematic areas, these IBH labs, which were launched in 2017, are intended to make a sustainable contribution to promoting knowledge, innovation and technology transfer in the Lake Constance area:
- Social and economic change: IBH-Living Lab Active & Assisted Living
- Innovation, digitization and regional competitiveness: IBH-Lab KMUdigital
- Education and knowledge space: IBH-Lab Seamless Learning
