The Karl International University is a private university based in Karlsruhe . It is recognized by the Ministry of Science in Baden-Württemberg and is operated by Karlshochschule gGmbH . 94% of this is owned by the non-profit Merkur University Foundation and 6% by the Karlsruhe Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It was founded in 2004 and started its studies in the winter semester 2005/2006. Studying at the university is subject to a fee.

history

In 1903 the university was founded as the Merkur Academy and in 1978 it was converted into the Merkur Academy MAI gGmbH . In 1992 a bachelor's program was started in cooperation with foreign universities. In 2004, MAI Private Universities gGmbH Karlsruhe was founded. This was accredited by the Science Council in 2005 and recognized by the state. Studies in its current form began in the 2005/2006 winter semester.

Due to maladministration, the increasing awareness of inadequate course content and failures in accreditation within the framework of the Bologna process , the accreditation was suspended in May 2008 after the examination revealed the conditions. In total, the university was given 27 conditions for re-admission. In the course of the subsequent restructuring, in addition to the reorganization of the administration and the redesign of the courses, the university's assets were transferred to a non-profit foundation at the beginning of 2009; on May 27, 2009 it was renamed from "Merkur International University of Applied Sciences" to "Karlshochschule International University". The reaccreditation took place in 2010 after the previously made conditions had been fulfilled and a new examination was successful.

The reaccreditation of all bachelor's degree programs took place in 2014. All eight bachelor’s degree programs available at the time were awarded a FIBAA premium seal. In 2015 the Karlshochschule was system-accredited by the FIBAA. With system accreditation, all courses currently offered and newly introduced during the term of the accreditation (initially 6 years) are accredited.

On December 19, 2016, it was announced in a press release that the Minister of State a. D. Eveline Lemke will become President of the university on April 1, 2017. At the turn of the year she took on her first voluntary tasks at the university. The former state minister said about her appointment that, as in politics, she would also be an “agent of change” as head of the university and that “[her] green handwriting will certainly become visible”. The appointment came under fire at the beginning of 2017 because Lemke did not have a university degree herself, having only studied economics at the University of Hanover up to the intermediate diploma. She left the university again in July 2017.

On November 1, 2017, Johann Schneider became temporarily president of the Karlshochschule. Michael Zerr has held this office since autumn 2018. He was president of the university from 2009 to 2016 and during this time he had a major impact on the current profile of the international teaching institution.

Merkur University Foundation

The operating company of the university is largely owned by the private Merkur University Foundation. This was founded in 2008 by Michael Zerr and his wife Ingrid Zerr as well as Elisabeth and Ernst Hunkel.

The economist Ernst Hunkel is active as an educational entrepreneur in southwest Germany and founded the Merkur Academy International . Hunkel founded the private university in 2005 as Merkur Internationale Fachhochschule Karlsruhe. From autumn 2005 to January 2009 he was its founding president.

The lawyer and administrative scientist Michael Zerr worked under Gerhard Goll for EnBW in Heidelberg. He was the founder and managing director of the EnBW cheap electricity and gas brand Yellow Strom , but was transferred within the company in 2003 after the division lost an estimated 500 million euros. Zerr was assistant to the head of the state chancellery under Heribert Rech (CDU) in the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg . He later became a professor of management at the Karlshochschule and, alongside Hunkel, a founder of the Merkur University Foundation.

Goll, too, became a lecturer at Karlshochschule in March 2008 and later became chairman of the foundation's board of directors.
