The Evangelical University for Church Music Tübingen is a church music training center of the Evangelical Regional Church in Württemberg . It is a state-recognized music college .

history

The Tübingen University of Church Music of the Evangelical State Church of Württemberg emerged in 1998 from the University of Church Music in Esslingen am Neckar , which was founded as a church music school in 1945. At this university, choir directors , organists and cantors were trained primarily for church service. The training courses usually ended with the church music A-exam , with the B-exam and other corresponding degrees. The Esslingen Church Music School was elevated to the University of Church Music in 1989. In 1995 it was the first university in Germany to include jazz and popular music in the subject canon of church music studies. It moved to Tübingen in autumn 1998 and has been a state-recognized music college under church sponsorship since 2009 .

Well-known lecturers from the founding time included Hans-Arnold Metzger , Karl Gerok , Helmut Bornefeld and Hermann Stern .

In addition to the undergraduate degree Bachelor Church Music B and Master Church Music A, the university currently offers further postgraduate courses in organ literature playing, organ improvisation, choir conducting and church popular music. The current postgraduate courses (artistic training) are to be converted to newly designed master's courses.

building

"Schwabenhaus", formerly the corp house of Suevia Tübingen, today the seat of the university

The university has been housed in Tübingen's “Schwabenhaus”, built in 1899, since 1998. This house once belonged to the student union " Suevia " and is a listed building on the left side of the Neckar (Gartenstrasse 12). There, students and lecturers have at their disposal five organs, five grand pianos, eight pianos, three harpsichords, several keyboards, vocal systems, mixer and computer workstations for arranging and mixing sounds. With over 70,000 media units in the Central Church Music Library, the University of Church Music houses one of the largest collections of church music, books and CDs in Germany.

The university building was completely renovated from autumn 2015 to spring 2017. In 2019 the Tübingen University of Church Music received a new construction of a north German baroque organ, which was inaugurated in 2020 for the 75th anniversary of the institution.

profile

The specific orientation of the University of Church Music Tübingen is shown, among other things, in the strong networking with other training institutions and partners. A nationwide unique ecumenical cooperation at educational level has been maintained with the Catholic University for Church Music in Rottenburg since 1998. There are joint courses, the joint university choir and the opportunity to switch teachers across universities. There is also a cooperation with the University of Church Music Heidelberg and with the traditional Evangelical Monastery of Tübingen (the Württemberg theological training center). The students attend classes in the subject of music history at the Musicological Institute of the University of Tübingen . The collegiate church of St. Georg provides the college with the collegiate church and the large Weigle / Rensch organ for concerts and exams. Furthermore, both Stiftskantor Ingo Bredenbach and the Stiftskantor Jens Wollenschläger teach organ literature and improvisation at the university . The Association of Evangelical Church Music in Württemberg enables students to take part in joint courses and workshops, as does the musical and cultural education department and the trombone work of the Evangelical Youth Office of the Württemberg regional church .

At the College of Church Music, great value is placed on a community-based and artistically demanding training. This can be seen in the integration of the specialist area of jazz and popular music, the training to become qualified children's choir leaders and vocal teachers with the university's own children's choir Tübinger Neckarschwalben, and subjects such as community singing, liturgical singing, wind and trombone choir work.

The students experience a particularly individual support through a high number of tutors and a conscious evangelical character, especially through work in the theological subjects and through a life of worship at the university.
