Hans Georg Bertram

Hans Georg Bertram (born August 27, 1936 in Gießen ; † July 12, 2013 in Berlin ) was a German composer and organist .

Life

Bertram studied Protestant church music and organ with Hans Arnold Metzger and composition with Johann Nepomuk David at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart . In 1963, as a student of Georg Reichert, he received his doctorate in musicology at the University of Würzburg and then worked as a cantor and organist in Gießen at the newly built Petruskirche.

In 1978 he was appointed lecturer for organ literature, organ improvisation and music history at the University of Church Music in Esslingen am Neckar , where he worked as a professor from 1988 until his retirement in 1997. This college moved in 1998 and has been called the Evangelical College for Church Music ever since . It is now based in Tübingen . From 1978 to 2007/08 Hans Georg Bertram worked as organist at the Stadtkirche Esslingen.

Bertram died at the age of 76 in July 2013 in Berlin. His estate is in the Württemberg State Library in Stuttgart.

His catalog raisonné contains choral and organ works, chamber music, orchestral works, two symphonies (2nd symphony “Canto per un altro mondo” premiered by the Ludwigsburg symphony orchestra on November 23, 1996 in the city church of Esslingen (Neckar)), concerts and oratorios. His best known oratorio is "Ecce homo". In recent years Bertram has focused on compositions for organ and speaker. So he developed the genre of the sacred cantata for the 21st century in a new way:

  • " Our Father Cantata " (2002/2003)
  • " Advent Cantata " (2004)
