Helmut Völkl

Helmut Rudolf Völkl (* 1954 in Uhingen ) is a German musicologist , music librarian , organist , author and publisher of organ music. His work Orgeln in Württemberg is one of the classics of specialist organ literature.

Live and act

As part of his C training as a church musician, Helmut Völkl received lessons in violin , organ and piano from Hans-Arnold Metzger and passed the C exam. He took organ lessons from church music director Ewald Großmann in Göppingen . From 1973 to 1977 he studied library science at the University of Applied Sciences for Libraries in Stuttgart . He completed this course in 1976 as a qualified librarian , and in 1977 he also obtained a degree as a qualified music librarian . Völkl then studied Protestant church music from 1977 to 1981 at the University of Church Music in Esslingen am Neckar , where Hans Georg Bertram , Rolf Hempel and Theo Sorg were among his teachers, and successfully passed the diploma examination in church music. From 1981 to 1984 he studied musicology and empirical cultural studies at the University of Tübingen . The Magister artium (1984) followed in 1986 with the work Orgeln in Württemberg, the doctorate to Dr. phil. in musicology.

From 1985 to 1997 Völkl worked for the association "Evangelical Church Music in Württemberg" as church music librarian and editor of the bi-monthly magazine Württembergische Blätter for church music . He then worked from 1997 to 2000 as a lecturer for the Carus music publisher .

From 1989 to 1995 Völkl had a teaching position at the University of Applied Sciences for Libraries in Stuttgart and then from 1995 to 2005 another teaching position with a research focus on "History of Organ Construction" at the University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart . Since 1991 he has been teaching musicology at lectures and seminars at the University of Church Music in Tübingen, giving introductions to scientific work and supervising diploma, bachelor and master theses. In addition, until the end of the 2017/18 winter semester he was head of the university's "Church Music Central Library Tübingen", which includes 75,000 media units and is one of the largest church music libraries in Germany.

For many years he was an organ expert for the Upper Church Council of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg . Since 1998, Völkl are courses for organ at the Gnessin - Academy of Music in Moscow and at the Catholic Cathedral Moscow .

In addition to his book publications, Völkl published numerous musicological articles in specialist journals; He is also editor-in-chief and publisher of the loose-leaf collection Praxishandbuch Chorleitung with specialist knowledge, practical examples and information for choir directors.

From 1970 to 1980 Völkl was organist at the collegiate church in Faurndau and from 1977 to 1981 choirmaster in Göppingen . Between 1998 and 2016 he was cantor and organist at the Frauenkirche in Esslingen am Neckar for eighteen years . From July 1, 2016, he took on the same tasks full-time in the Christ Church in Korntal .
