Rolf Hempel

Rolf Hempel (born June 28, 1932 in Reichenbach im Vogtland ; † October 18, 2016 in Esslingen ) was a German church musician, organ expert and composer.

Life

Rolf Hempel attended the Robert Schumann Academy in Zwickau as a young student at the same time he was attending grammar school , where he was taught piano, trumpet and composition. From 1952 to 1957 he studied music in Berlin with a major in composition / music theory with Boris Blacher and Ernst Pepping . He then became a lecturer in music theory at the University of Church Music in Tübingen . From there he switched to the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart as a lecturer in 1971 , where he was appointed lecturer after a few years and finally professor in 1980. From 1971 to 1976 Hempel took over the management of a music school.

From 1983 to 1985 he taught the Stuttgart summer courses for new music. In 1985 he co-founded the Esslingen Studio Concerts for New Music. From 1988 to 1990 he took over the post of Vice Rector of the State University of Music and Performing Arts and was its Rector from 1990 to 1997.

In addition to his teaching and management activities in Stuttgart, Hempel has held regular courses in New Music at the universities in Lodz (Poland), St. Petersburg (Russia) as well as Beijing and Wuhan (China) since 1985.

Hempel also made a name for himself as a composer. His oeuvre includes works for voice, solo instruments, various chamber music ensembles, choir, orchestra and orchestra with solo instruments. Rolf Hempel has received several awards at international composition competitions for his diverse musical work. His awards include the sponsorship award of the City of Stuttgart, the 1st Prize of the Musical Youth of Germany and the Johann Wenzel Stamitz Prize.
