Michael Schütz (church musician)

Michael Schütz (born July 29, 1963 in Karlsruhe ) is a German church musician , composer and university lecturer. He is particularly dedicated to combining traditional music styles with popular music .

Life

Michael Schütz studied from 1983 to 1990 at the Evangelical College for Church Music in Esslingen. From 1992 to 1999 he was a consultant for musical and cultural education in Stuttgart with a seat in the State Music Council of Baden-Württemberg, from 1994 to 1998 he had a teaching position for popular music at the Hochschule für Kirchenmusik Esslingen. From 1998 to 2014 he was a lecturer in popular music at the University of Church Music in Tübingen and from 2000 to 2008 at the Federal Academy of Trossingen. Since 2010 he has been cantor at the Trinitatiskirche Berlin and teaches popular music at the Berlin University of the Arts .

Michael Schütz has been active as a concert musician since 1983: In live concerts, on radio and television and on recordings as a solo pianist, with his own formations ("Tough Stuff", "Roger'n'Stuff", "Michael Schütz Quartet" and "Sona nova") and as an accompanist for international artists such as Jennifer Rush , Gloria Gaynor , Klaus Doldinger ’s Passport, The Temptations , Chaka Khan , Xavier Naidoo , Deborah Sasson , Ingrid Peters , Toto Cutugno , German Brass and the SWR Big Band .

Since 1986 he has worked on recordings. Since 1993 Schütz has been working as a lecturer and seminar leader in the field of brass instruments , music groups and church musicians in associations and institutions of the regional churches in the EKD . Since 1995 he has published compositions, arrangements and specialist literature.

Schütz was the band leader, arranger and pianist at major events, including the introduction of the Evangelical Hymnal in the Collegiate Church in Stuttgart (1996), the opening service of the 27th German Evangelical Church Congress in Stuttgart (1999), and the closing service of the 28th German Evangelical Church Congress in Frankfurt am Main (Waldstadion, 2001), as a pianist at the closing service of the 31st German Evangelical Church Congress (2007), as a pianist at podium events with Gesine Schwan , Olaf Scholz , Cem Özdemir and at the 32nd German Evangelical Church Congress in Bremen (2009).

In 2000 Schütz wrote the drama music for Goethe's Faust II as a commissioned composition for the Uckermärkische Bühnen Schwedt , which is still performed regularly today. He composed and arranged for concerts, events, cabaret programs, musicals and musical theater. His commissioned composition Lobgesang zu Trinitatis for the Association of Evangelical Church Music in Württemberg was premiered in Stuttgart in 2002 , his Mass 2012 premiered in Berlin in 2012 .

With his formation "sona nova" Schütz performed in 2007 at Carnegie Hall in New York City .

In 2014 he rearranged 17 psalms under the title “His praise will inflame you”. The result is seven songbooks for all areas of church music: for choirs, for wind ensembles, for organ, for guitar and percussion and for bands.

In 2016 he was conductor at the German Evangelical Trumpet Day with 25,000 brass players in the DDV Stadium in Dresden; In addition, he is regularly available for trombone choirs and trombone works for further training in wind instruments.

Private

Schütz lives with his wife Christina Schütz and their two children in Potsdam .
