His work Pantheon builds on the B minor Mass by Johann Sebastian Bach . He composed on behalf of the International Bach Academy Stuttgart (2002/2005/2008), the German Literature Archive , the city of Esslingen am Neckar and other clients.

In 2018 he was appointed professor there.

Reviews

The press describes his game as follows:

  • “... He condenses his playing into frenetic attacks, into complex nested rhythms and sharply pointed harmonies. The late Romantic rampant virtuoso vocabulary of a Skriabin and Rachmaninoff is continued and intensified in Bebelaar's art at the height of the unleashed intoxication. "
  • "... Avant-garde playing techniques and respectful continuation of tradition."

Prizes, awards and grants

Bebelaar has received various grants from the University of Natal, Durban (1995/96), the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg (1996) and the Hermann Haake Foundation (1996). In 2000, Bebelaar was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize. In 2003 he received the “Special Award” from the Kingdom of Kwazulu Natal for his music education work. The South African Association for Jazz Education recognized him in 2005 for his "Outstanding Service to Jazz Education". In 2008 he was artist in residence at the University of Cape Town (2008). The CD Three Seasons (HGBS 2014 with Günter “Baby” Sommer and Michel Godard) was voted “Album of the Year 2014” by The New York City Jazz Record . His CD "Stupor Mundi" (dml-records 2015 with Michel Godard, Vincent Klink, Gavino Murgia and Carlo Rizzo) was awarded the German Record Critics' Prize (best list 1/2015, Grenzgang).
