The University of Cape Town ( Afrikaans : Universiteit van Kaapstad ; English: University of Cape Town ; UCT for short ) is a university in Cape Town in the South African province of Western Cape . It was founded in 1829, making it South Africa's oldest university . It is located on the flanks of one of the peaks of the Table Mountain range, Devil's Peak . In 2014, 26,357 students attended this school, around 31 percent of the South African students were white, 23 percent black and 14 percent colored . 18 percent of the students are foreigners.

According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2010 , the University of Cape Town is the best university in Africa with 107th place. In 2017, however, it was only 148th internationally.

history

The university was founded in 1829 as a South African College . Towards the end of the 19th century, the first university in what is now South Africa developed from this. Women were admitted for the first time in 1887.

In 2015, the student protest campaign #RhodesMustFall began, the aim of which was to remove a statue of Cecil Rhodes on the university campus. The protests went on for a long time, eventually turning against an increase in tuition fees, outsourcing of staff and patriarchal manners on campus.

management

The university is nominally by a Chancellor ( Chancellor directed). This position has exclusively representative functions and is awarded for ten years. Your important task is to award academic degrees. Graça Machel held this position for two terms from September 1999 to December 2019 . She was replaced by Precious Moloi-Motsepe in 2020 .

Most important person is, however, the Vice-Chancellor ( Vice-Chancellor in charge) of all academic and administrative affairs of the university. The current Vice Chancellor has been the mathematician Mamokgethi Phakeng since July 2018 .

The Senate , headed by the Vice Chancellor, is responsible for academic management . In addition to the Vice Chancellor, it includes the Registrar , four Deputy Vice Chancellors, two Pro-Vice Chancellors, the deans of the faculties and managing directors .

The University Council is responsible for the strategic direction . He is responsible for guidelines and financial planning. According to the South African Higher Education Act of 1997, it is composed primarily of non-academic persons. The Cape Town Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane leads the university council.

There is a partnership with the University of Stuttgart .
