Njongonkulu Ndungane
Njongonkulu Winston Hugh Ndungane (born April 2, 1941 in Kokstad ) is a South African theologian , active from 1996 to 2007 as Archbishop of Cape Town and primate of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa and thus the successor to Desmond Tutu .
Life
He graduated from Lovedale High School in 1958. In 1960, participation in the anti-pass demonstration shaped his political stance on the apartheid system in South Africa. For his early engagement, he had to serve a three-year prison term as a political prisoner on Robben Island from August 1963 to August 1966 . During this time he chose to serve in the Church. He was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Cape Town in 1974 .
From January 1985 to December 1986, Ndungane led the Theological St. Bede's College in Umtata as a principal.
In 1991 he received the episcopal ordination . From 1991 to 1996 Ndungane served as Bishop of Kimberley and Kuruman . Then, in September 1996, he took over the office of Archbishop of Cape Town. Since 2007 Ndungane has been working for the Historic Schools Restoration Project . His successor as archbishop and primate is Thabo Makgoba .
