The Association of African Universities ( AAU for short , German Association of the Universities of Africa ) is an international umbrella organization on the African continent based in Accra , Ghana . It serves the cooperation, consultation and mutual information of all institutions for higher education in Africa. The organization was founded on November 12, 1967 in Rabat , the capital of Morocco , on the basis of a UNESCO recommendation from 1962.

As of October 2011, the AAU had a total of 268 member institutions from 46 African countries.

AAU President George Magoha stated in 2011 that only 242 of the approximately 600 universities in Africa are members of the AAU. The AAU is accused of having a strong Anglophone orientation and many francophone and lusophone universities prefer to cooperate with corresponding international university organizations.
