Rosina Mamokgethi Phakeng (née Mmutlana , temporarily Mamokgethi Setati ) GCOB (born November 1, 1966 in Pretoria ) is a South African professor of mathematics didactics . She has been Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town (UCT) since 2018 .

Live and act

Mmutlana was born in Eastwood, Pretoria , to Frank and Wendy Mmutlana (née Thipe) . Her mother went back to school after the birth of her three children in order to later work as a teacher. Her father was one of the first black radio announcers for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). She was married to Richard Setati from 1988 to 2007, and their son was born in 1990. In 2012 she married Madimetja Lucky Phakeng and took his family name.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in pure mathematics from the University of the North-West , and a Master of Science degree in mathematics didactics from Witwatersrand University . In 2002 she became the first black South African woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics didactics.

In 2004, she founded the nonprofit Adopt-A-Learner to provide financial support to low-income learners.

In January 2017 she was appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Internationalization of UCT, and in 2018 she became Vice Chancellor of UCT.

  • NSTF Award for Most Outstanding Senior Black Female Researcher in the Past 5 to 10 Years Recognizing Her Innovative, High Quality Research on Teaching and Learning Math in Multilingual Classrooms, May 2011.
