The Northwest University ( Afrikaans : Noordwes-Universiteit ; English : North-West University ; Setswana : Yunibesiti ya Bokone-Bophirima ), NWU for short , is a state university in the Republic of South Africa with locations in the provincial capital Mahikeng ( Mmabatho district ), Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark .
The Northwest University was created on January 1, 2004 from a merger of the former Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and the University of the North-West as well as the incorporation of the Sebokeng campus of the dissolved Vista University .
It was named after the province of Northwest .

The university is headed by a Vice Chancellor, the management also includes two Deputy Vice Chancellors, an examination officer, two managing directors and the campus rectors . The Chancellor is the highest representative in charge of the University for the award of degrees. Management is responsible to the University Council, which together with the Senate determines the guidelines and is responsible for financial planning and academic affairs.
The NWU is located on three campus areas, the largest of which is Potchefstroom, which is also the main campus of the university. The five faculties are located on the campus:
- Agriculture , Science and Technology
- Commerce and Administration
- education
- Humanities and Social Sciences
- Jurisprudence .
The faculties are further divided into schools , with a total of 14 such departments and centers.
