Mmabatho ( Setswana ; German: "Mother of the People") is a city in the South African Northwest Province . It belongs to the municipality ( Local Municipality ) Mahikeng in the district Ngaka Modiri Molema and has been administratively a district of the provincial capital Mahikeng since 1994 .
history
Mmabatho was established as the capital of the homeland of Bophuthatswana two kilometers north of the city of Mafikeng , which in turn became a district of Mmabathos in 1980. In March 1994 there was an uprising against Homeland President Lucas Mangope in Mmabatho . There were shootings with militant Boers , looting and the use of the South African army . After the end of apartheid and the reintegration of Bophuthatswana in South Africa in April 1994, Mmabatho was initially the capital of the newly created Northwest Province, but became part of Mafikeng in 1996, which was renamed Mahikeng in 2010. Today both cities belong to the municipality of Mahikeng as main places; Mahikeng is the provincial capital. In 2011 Mmabatho had 38,297 residents.
Infrastructure and traffic
Mmabatho is located on the Mahikeng campus of North West University .
The N18 national road runs through Mmabatho . The Mmabatho International Airport was renamed Mahikeng Airport .
