history

The University of Pretoria was founded in 1908 as an offshoot of the Johannesburg Transvaal University College (TUC) with four professorships , three lecturers and thirty-two students. She was housed in a Victorian house, the Kye Rosa , in the center of town. In 1910 the university became independent of the TUC and took over its name, at the same time it received its first campus in eastern Pretoria. Between 1917 and 1919 the faculties were established and expanded. In 1930 it was given university status on the initiative of Jan Smuts . In 1939, with the help of a large donation, the university library was built, and in 1943 the medical faculty was founded. Until 1982, the campus expanded through new buildings and extensions, and the number of students doubled during this time. With the end of apartheid , the UP opened up to all population groups. Since 1994, the University of Pretoria has maintained a balanced relationship between different ethnic and linguistic student groups, and the proportion of female students is just over 50%. In 2016 it was decided to make English the language of instruction after Afrikaans had previously also been the language of instruction.
