Anton Rupert

Anthony (Anton) Edward Rupert (born October 4, 1916 in Graaf-Reinet , † January 18, 2006 in Stellenbosch ) was a South African entrepreneur and billionaire.

Life

Rupert grew up in his birthplace Graaff-Reinet in the Ost-Kaap, studied chemistry in Pretoria and moved to Stellenbosch , where he founded the Rembrandt Group . He had dropped out of medical school.

After working as a chemistry lecturer, he began to produce in his garage cigarettes and founded the tobacco - conglomerate Rembrandt . Rembrandt later split into Remgro (an investment group) and Richemont (a luxury goods holding ). Rupert’s company now has several branches in 35 countries on six continents with annual sales of US $ 10 billion.

Rupert was involved in environmental protection and the promotion of art. Since 1964, various Rembrandt funds have used part of the company's profits to support education, art, music and the restoration of historic buildings. Rupert was a co-founder of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) .

Rupert acquired a stake in South Africa's Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC), which has been creating non-profit jobs since 1981. Rupert also appeared as an opponent of apartheid . In 2004 he was voted 28th in the list of the 100 greatest South Africans by viewers of the television channel SABC3.

He left behind son Johann , daughter Hanneli and six grandchildren.
