Remgro Limited is a South African holding company based in Stellenbosch . It is controlled by the family of Johann Rupert .

history

In 1940 Anton Rupert founded the tobacco company Voorbrand in Johannesburg , from which the Rembrandt Group emerged in 1948.

1950 the Rembrandt Group goes to the Johannesburg stock exchange .

In 1972 the foreign activities are combined in Rothmans International, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange .

Expansion begins in the 1970s into new businesses including banking , mining , cellular , printing and food .

1995 Rembrandt and Richemont bring their entire tobacco business into Rothmans International.

In 1999 Rothmans International merged with British American Tobacco .

2000 The group is restructured: all investments in tobacco, banking, mining and industry are brought into Remgro Limited, investments in technology and telecommunications in VenFin Limited. After the BAT shareholding was split off in 2008, Remgro and VenFin were merged again in 2009.
