Air Products , officially Air Products & Chemicals , is an American manufacturer of industrial gases that is listed in the S&P 500 . Air Products is headquartered in Allentown, Pennsylvania in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania.
The German branch is located in Hattingen .
history
After Air Products was founded in Detroit in 1940 , the first oxygen generator was leased from a local steel mill in 1941. During World War II , the company built mobile oxygen generators for the military and moved to Chattanooga . After the war, the company moved to its current location in Allentown. In the 1950s, the company was able to land further large orders from the military and NASA . During the following decade, the company established additional offices around the world, and in the 1970s plastics were added to the program and hydrogen was supplied for the space shuttle program . In the decades that followed, Air Products expanded through numerous acquisitions, the establishment of new locations and the expansion of the portfolio to include products for the semiconductor industry .
On January 3, 2017, Air Products sold its specialty additives business to Evonik . It included the production of special amines , ethoxylates and silicon surfactants.
Products
In addition to various industrial gases, the company produces semiconductor materials, refinery hydrogen and other chemicals. The company supplied the liquid hydrogen and oxygen for fueling the Space Shuttle External Tanks .
Air Products is the only company in the world that operates a factory for the extraction of helium from carbon dioxide . The helium-rich carbon dioxide required for this comes from a natural deposit in Doe Canyon ( Colorado ).
