FirstRand Limited is a South African banking group based in Johannesburg and one of the largest companies in Africa.

Corporate activities

The FirstRand group manages a total of 900 billion rand in assets . FirstRand's portfolio includes the branch bank First National Bank (FNB) with 766 branches, the insurance company Momentum, the investment bank Rand Merchant Bank and the car financing specialist WesBank, so that the full range of financial services is offered.

The subsidiary FirstRand Namibia is the largest credit institute in Namibia.

history

FirstRand was formed in April 1998 through the merger of the banking activities of Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Limited (AAC) and Rand Merchant Bank Holdings Limited (RMBH). On May 25, 1998, the new company was first listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

Anglo American and De Beers were originally major shareholders in FirstRand, but sold their shares through 2003 to focus on their mining activities. RMBH has meanwhile increased its share from 25% to 32.83%.

The FNB goes back to the Eastern Province Bank in Grahamstown, founded in 1838, making it the oldest bank in South Africa.

FirstRand Limited shares are listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the Namibia Stock Exchange. In terms of market value, FirstRand Limited is one of the largest companies in Africa and is therefore also included in the S&P Africa 40 Index, which was created in 2008 .

Others

The First National Bank was one of the "national sponsors" of the Soccer World Cup 2010 and is the name-giving sponsor of Soccer City ( FNB Stadium ) in Johannesburg , the largest stadium in Africa. a. the opening game and the final were played.

FirstRand Limited puts 1% of profits into a charitable foundation called the FirstRand Foundation. It was launched in 1998 and a book about its work was published for its 20th anniversary.

In addition, the FirstRand Empowerment Foundation was established in 2005 with the following founding members: FirstRand Limited, FirstRand Bank Limited, Kagiso Charitable Trust, The WDB Trust, WDB Investment Holdings (Proprietary) Limited, Mineworkers Investment Trust and MIC Financial Holdings (Proprietary) Limited. The aim of this foundation is the fight against poverty, unemployment and inequality of opportunity by means of systemically relevant social investments in education. It is financed by stock dividends from FirstRand, MMI and Discovery.
