The Bronx River is a 38 km long river in the US state of New York . Its origin is at the Kensico Reservoir in Westchester County . From there it flows south to past White Plains , then continues in a south-southwest direction through the towns of Edgemont , Tuckahoe , Eastchester and Bronxville . Behind it it forms the border between Yonkers and Mount Vernon and finally reaches the Bronx . There it crosses residential and industrial areas as well as the New York Botanical Garden in Bronx Park and finally flows into the East River between the neighborhoods of Soundview and Hunts Point . The Bronx River Parkway runs along the waterfront for most of its length.
In the 19th and 20th centuries in particular, the Bronx River served as a sewer to adjacent communities and industries . In recent years, however, residents have committed to stop discharging faeces. Various water remediation measures have also started; among other things, Alewife ( Alosa pseudoharengus ), a relative of allis shad and feint from the herring family, was settled.
