Alosa is a genus of fish that belongs to the herring-like species . They differ from other genera in this family in their higher body and the fact that they spawn in freshwater rivers. The distribution area of the Alosa species extends across the Atlantic and the Mediterranean . The juvenile fish of the genus Alosa live in fresh water for one to two years.
Individual species of the genus Alosa were important for human nutrition. This genus was particularly heavily fished during the 18th century. Traditionally they were caught with salmon . On the east coast of the USA, the caviar of these fish species is particularly valued. Due to the pollution of many rivers, individual species from this genus have become rare. The allis shad (also "Alse", Alosa alosa ) belonging to this genus was fish of the year 2004 in Germany.
