The Clupeoidei are a suborder of the herring-like (Clupeiformes) which, with the exception of living in the West African freshwater sting herring ( Denticeps clupeoides includes) (Family Denticipitidae, subordination Denticipitoidei), all kinds of herring-like.

features

In the Clupeoidei, the lateral line does not extend over the body, but only extends one or two scales behind the gill cover , other lateral line scales with pores are missing. The caudal fin is supported by 19 main fin rays. The first uroneuralia is usually fused with the vertebral body of a particular vertebra (first prurale) of the caudal spine, the parhypurals usually separated from that vertebral body. This vertebra lies in front of another vertebra (first Urals), which in all herring-like species is fused with the second hypuralia . The swim bladder is designed very differently and extremely specialized in hatchet pegs. In the eggs the yolk is segmented (otherwise only in the butter ).

Familys

The Clupeoidei belong to six families, 83 genera and about 400 species.
