The Dorosomatinae are a subfamily of the herring (Clupeidae) that occurs mainly in tropical and subtropical regions of the world's oceans and in fresh waters (e.g. in the East African Tanganyika Sea ).

features

The diagnostic feature of the Dorosomatinae is the non-overlapping gill rake . This feature is not found in the Pellonulini tribe . These could have lost the trait secondary or the Pellonulini and the other genera of the Dorosomatinae are sister groups . The current composition of the subfamily was determined by DNA comparisons .

Before that, the subfamily originally diagnosed on a morphological basis comprised only the genera Anodontostoma, Clupanodon, Dorosoma, Gonialosa, Konosirus and Nematalosa . The species of these genera are medium-sized herring fish, most species are about 30 cm long or a little longer. Their ventral side is completely covered with strong scales, with Clupanodon also the area in front of the dorsal fin. The dorsal fin stands over the middle of the body. The last fin ray is elongated like a thread in the genera Clupanodon, Dorosoma, Konosirus and Nematalosa , which is why they are referred to in German as Fadenflossige Alsen. The mouth is more or less subordinate, sometimes also terminal. The symphysis of the lower jaw engages in a notch in the middle of the upper jaw. The fish are toothless, the gill rays are numerous. A pair of pharyngeal pouches above the fourth gill arch is apparently used to collect food. The stomach is muscular and corresponds to a chewing stomach . Most thread-fin ales are silvery, often with a dark spot behind the gill opening, followed by a row of dots in some species.

  • Scale formula : mLR 38–55 (43–71 in Gonialosa and up to 86 in some Dorosoma ).

Genera and species

The Dorosomatinae include around 110 species in 30 genera.
