Ethmalosa fimbriata is a small herring-like species from the subfamily Dorosomatinae and the only species of the monotypic genus Ethmalosa . This fish is widespread along the west coast of Africa. Itis very important inthe commercial fishery there.
description
Ethmalosa fimbriata has a stocky, high-backed, laterally compressed and spindle-shaped body. The ventral side is scaled. As with all herring-like species , the fins consist only of soft rays . The dorsal fin has 16 to 19, the anal fin 19 to 23. The tip of the dorsal fin is blackish, the caudal fin is shiny and deeply split. An indistinct spot appears behind the gill cover. The flanks are shiny yellow.
Ethmalosa fimbriata has a gizzard , but which does not so muscular as of Brevoortia and Ethmidium is.
Distribution, habitat and biology
In ethmalosa fimbriata is a shoal of fish, which occurs primarily in coastal areas along the coast of West Africa. In addition, this species is an anadromous migratory fish that swims up to 300 kilometers up the rivers to spawn. However, it also spawns in the sea and in brackish water . It feeds filtration of phytoplankton , especially diatoms .
