Scomberomorus tritor is a fish in the mackerel and tuna families thatis important in commercial fishing. It is widespread on the west coast of Africa and in the western Mediterranean. Some authors see Scomberomorus tritor as a synonym of Scomberomorus maculatus .

description

The first dorsal fin consists of 15 to 18 hard rays , the second dorsal fin of 16 to 19 soft rays . The anal fin has 17 to 20 soft rays. There are seven to nine fleas above and below the tail stalk. The small, chest- like pelvic fins start under the pectoral fins , which themselves start on the middle of the body. The large, deeply split caudal fin is typical of the fast swimming Scombrids . The flanks are silver, the back metallic blue. There are several rows of darker spots on the sides. The lateral line organ is very wavy and irregular in this species. A swim bladder is missing. Scomberomorus tritor reaches a maximum length of one meter.

Distribution, habitat and biology

This species is distributed on the west coast of Africa and in the Mediterranean from southern Angola to Tunisia and Spain; Also on the south coast of France to Italy and the northern Adriatic is West African Spanish mackerel before. It is a group fish that occurs in large schools in the Benthal . It reproduces from July to August. Eggs and larvae are pelagic. The predatory fish shows a particular predilection for the small herring-like Ethmalosa fimbriata .
