Scomberomorus maculatus is a marine predator of the mackerel and tuna families. It is important to humans in both commercial and recreational fishing .

The first dorsal fin , the foremost part of which is colored black, consists of 17 to 19 hard rays , the second of 17 to 20 soft rays . This is followed by seven to nine rafts. The anal fin has as the second dorsal fin 17 to 20 soft rays, behind seven to ten Flössel. The caudal fin is large and deeply split. The pelvic fins are very small. The pectoral fins attach to the middle of the body. The spindle-shaped body reaches a maximum length of 91 centimeters. There is no swim bladder . Distribution, habitat and way of life
Scomberomorus maculatus inhabits the continental shelf in the Gulf of Mexico and around the east coast of North America to about 19 ° North, Florida and the Greater Antilles . The species is not represented off the Bahamas . Water depths of 10 to 35 meters are preferred.
