Scomberomorus also Spanish mackerel ( engl. : Spanish Mackerels ), is a genus of marine predators from the family of mackerel and tuna with 18 species . Many species are important to humans as sport fish and in commercial fishing . The type species is Scomberomorus regalis .

description

Both dorsal fins are separate. The first dorsal fin has 12 to 22 hard rays . Often the first part of this fin is dark. The second dorsal fin consists of 15 to 25 soft rays , followed by six to eleven flosses. The anal fin has 15 to 28 soft rays, followed by five to eleven flippers. As fast swimmers, they have a large, deeply split tail fin . The pelvic fins are very small and on the chest. The Scomberomorus species have spindle-shaped bodies, the largest species is Scomberomorus sinensis with a maximum length of 247 centimeters. The muzzle is longer than the rest of the head. The back of the maxilla is exposed. There is never a swim bladder . There are 5 to 35 sharp teeth in the upper and lower jaw. In many species the lateral line is very irregular, often its course falls off from the second dorsal fin. The back is bluish, the flanks silvery and, in most species, patterned with stripes or spots.

Distribution, habitat and biology

Scomberomorus species occur mainly above the shelf in the western and indo-Pacific . Some species are also common on the eastern Pacific coast and the western Atlantic coast . With Scomberomorus tritor , the genus is also widespread on the eastern Atlantic coast and in the Mediterranean , Scomberomorus commerson migrates to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal . The animals prefer coastal waters and often live as group fish . They are predatory fish that feed mainly on smaller fish such as anchovies , but also on shrimps and cephalopods .
