Scomberomorus sierra is a Scombride that is important both as a sport fish and in commercial fishing. Itis highly valuedas a food fish .

The first dorsal fin of this fish consists of 15 to 18 hard rays , the second dorsal fin of 16 to 19 soft rays . The anal fin has 16 to 21 soft rays. There are seven to ten rafts above and below the tail stalk. The large, deeply split caudal fin is typical of a Scombrid . The pectoral fins usually have 21 soft rays each. The flanks are silvery, the back a little darker. There are several rows of yellowish, orange or brownish spots on the flanks. There is no swim bladder .

Distribution, habitat and biology

Scomberomorus sierra is distributed on the west coast of the American double continent from Baja California to the coast of Peru and around the Galapagos Islands . This species of fish prefers shallow coastal waters up to twelve meters deep. It feeds mainly on small herring- like species such as B. Anchovies . It is a group fish .
