Scomberomorus cavalla is a marine fish from the mackerel and tuna family that is found on the western Atlantic coast from Nova Scotia to Salvador da Bahia and in the Caribbean. It is fished commercially and is also known as sport fish .

description

The animal reaches a maximum length of 184 centimeters. The first dorsal fin usually consists of 15 hard rays , the second dorsal fin of 15 to 18 soft rays . The anal fin consists of 16 to 20 soft rays. There are usually nine rafts on the top of the tail stem and eight on the bottom. The large caudal fin is deeply split. The pectoral fins each have 21 to 23 soft rays. The pelvic fins are very small and on the chest. The flanks are silver. Juvenile specimens have bronze spots on the flanks. There is no swim bladder . The sideline initially runs well above the center of the body, at the base of the second dorsal fin it bends down and then continues on the center of the body.

Habitat and Biology

Scomberomorus cavalla is an oceanodromic group fish . It lives in shallow water (5 to 15 meters), but rarely occurs at depths of up to 140 meters. The predatory fish feeds mainly on fish, also on crustaceans and cephalopods .
