Scomberomorus plurilineatus is a marine fish from the mackerel and tuna family that is found on the southeast coast of Africa, around Madagascar and the islands to the north. It is important both as a sport fish and in commercial fishing.

description

The first dorsal fin consists of 15 to 17 hard rays , the distance between which increases from about the fifth ray. The second dorsal fin has 19 to 21 soft rays , the anal fin sometimes has one more soft ray. There are eight to ten fleas on the top of the tail stalk and seven to ten on the underside. The pelvic fins are small and start at about the same level as the pectoral fins . The caudal fin is large and deeply split.

The body is spindle-shaped and somewhat more "misshapen" than that of most other Scombrids . For example, the forehead is slightly hump-shaped, the attachment of the anal fin is further away from the center of the body than the attachment of the dorsal fin. A swim bladder is missing. The flanks have a silvery, slightly bluish sheen and are patterned with several horizontal rows of irregular, dark, short lines. The back is metallic blue. The total number of vertebrae is 45 to 46.

Distribution, habitat and biology

Scomberomorus plurilineatus is native to the southeast coast of Africa . The distribution area extends over the littoral from Kenya to the Cape of Good Hope , as well as around Madagascar and the surrounding islands, Bassas da India , the Seychelles and the Mascarene Islands , down to a depth range of 50 to 200 meters. The species reaches sexual maturity at a length of about 80 centimeters. It feeds mainly on small fish, especially anchovies and sardines , but also on cephalopods and crustaceans .
